Spanning 240 acres (approximately 100 hectares), it features 800 genera, 2,100 plant species, and nearly 8,500 trees. Highlights include a 3-billion-year-old rock, a 20-million-year-old fossil, the iconic Glass House inspired by London’s Crystal Palace, a mango tree planted by Hyder Ali, a British-era bandstand, a tree branch resembling Ganesh’s face, a 200-year-old White Silk Cotton tree, a 300-ft tall Cook Pine tree named after Captain Cook, and trees planted by notable visitors like Queen Victoria, Khan Abdul Gafar Khan, Nikita Krushchev, and Dag Hammarskjöld. A stroll through the park is both refreshing and enlightening.
- Bull Temple - The Big Bull of Bangalore has attracted visitors since 1537, created by Bangalore’s founder, Magadi Kempe Gowda. He discovered a large monolithic rock resembling a bull and decided to sculpt it. The Bull, or Nandi, is Lord Shiva’s vehicle, one of the three principal Hindu Gods. It ranks as the fourth largest among the seven monolithic big bulls in South India. The Bull Temple area is famous for the Ground Nut Fair held every November. At the hillock’s base, where Nandi sits, is the Butter Ganesh temple. The complex houses many more temples worth visiting.
- Vidhana Soudha and Attara Kacheri - Vidhana Soudha is Bangalore’s most significant landmark, serving as the Karnataka State Parliament and seat of power. Built in 1956 by then Chief Minister Kengal Hanumanthayya, it was inspired by a Russian delegation member’s critical remark in 1950, prompting the CM to construct it to overshadow the British vestige. With its neo-Dravidian architecture, Vidhana Soudha is considered one of the world’s top 10 parliament buildings. Visitors can admire it from the outside, as entry is restricted.
- Tipu Sultan Fort and Palace - Bangalore KR Market - The 220-year-old Tipu Palace, once the king’s summer residence, is crafted from teak wood in typical Islamic architecture, showcasing the diwan-e-am and diwan-e-khas. The venue offers insights into Tipu Sultan’s history, his alliances with the French, the Anglo-Mysore wars, and his contributions and controversies. The on-site museum highlights his legacy as the “Grandfather of Rocket Science.”
- KR Market - For an authentic Indian experience, visit Krishna Rajendra Market. This bustling market engages all the senses with vendors, workers, coolies, hawkers, buyers, cows, dogs, cycles, rickshaws, bikes, and scooters vying for space. Heaps of vegetables, fruits, flowers, and spices abound. Despite the chaos, there is an underlying order. Experience the vibrant and lively Indian market of essentials.
