- Nim Li Punit (Big Hat) - Nim Li Punit, translating to “Big Hat” in the Kechi Maya language, is an intriguing archaeological site located in the foothills of the Maya Mountains near Indian Creek village in Belize’s Toledo District. This medium-sized city flourished during the Late Classic Period (around 721–890 AD) and is celebrated for its remarkable collection of carved stelae and well-preserved ceremonial architecture. At its height, Nim Li Punit was home to an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 residents. Its strategic position between the Caribbean Sea and the Maya Mountains enabled extensive trade, as evidenced by artifacts like obsidian, jade, ceramics, and shells discovered on-site. A notable jade pendant with Mayan hieroglyphs was found in 2015, providing insights into the city’s dynastic ties to major centers such as Tikal and Copán.
