A Taste of Belize City

The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as my wife and I made our way to the tender that would take us from our ship to the vibrant heart of Belize City. The anticipation of exploring a new city, tasting its authentic flavors, and immersing ourselves in its culture was palpable. As seasoned travelers, we knew that the journey was just as important as the destination, and this one promised to be unforgettable.

Our adventure began with a slight hiccup. The tender ride took longer than expected, and we found ourselves running late for the start of our Belize City Food Tour. But, as luck would have it, a representative from the tour was waiting for us at the port. With a quick call, he arranged for a taxi to whisk us away to the awaiting van where our guide, Kenton, greeted us with a warm smile and a bag of fresh, juicy fruit. The mangoes, in particular, were a revelation—ripe, sweet, and bursting with flavor.

The tasting session was a highlight, with my wife discovering a newfound love for the locally produced Cashew Wine and White Rum—delights that we couldn’t find back home.

As we continued our tour, we were treated to a Belizean classic: chicken tamales wrapped in banana leaves. The flavors were rich and comforting, a testament to the culinary heritage of the region. We savored each bite as we drove through the city, the aroma of spices mingling with the warm breeze that drifted through the van’s open windows.

Our next culinary stop was a local ice cream shop, where we indulged in flavors crafted from native fruits.
