The Ascent Begins

The Great Wall of China has always been on my bucket list, and when I heard about the Great Wall Hike from Simatai to Jinshanling, I knew it was time to lace up my hiking boots and hit the trail. Meeting up with my guide, Dewit, at the station, I could feel the anticipation building. Dewit, a seasoned guide with a wealth of knowledge, was the perfect companion for this adventure.

As we arrived at Jinshanling, the air was crisp, and the sky was a brilliant blue—a perfect day for a hike. We began our ascent toward the East Five Window Tower, a 30-minute climb that rewarded us with breathtaking views. The Wall stretched out before us, a serpentine marvel of ancient engineering. It was a sight to behold, and I couldn’t help but feel a rush of adrenaline as we continued our journey westward.

A Hidden Gem

Unlike the crowded sections of Badaling or Mutianyu, Jinshanling felt like a hidden gem. The peace and quiet were a welcome change, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the experience. Dewit shared fascinating insights about the history of the Wall, and his well-timed rest stops were much appreciated. He even surprised us with an apple and a Snickers bar—an energy boost that hit the spot just when we needed it.

The hike offered a mix of wild and restored sections of the Wall, each with its own unique charm. As we approached the Brick Crenel Tower, the views became even more spectacular. The Wall snaked along the mountain ridges, a testament to the ingenuity and determination of those who built it. It was a photographer’s paradise, and I found myself snapping photos at every turn.

A Memorable Descent

As we neared the end of our hike, Dewit presented me with a certificate commemorating my climb. It was a thoughtful gesture that added a special touch to the day. I also picked up a medal from one of the souvenir stalls, and together they made for a perfect keepsake photo.

After descending from the Wall, we capped off the day with a delicious local Chinese lunch. The flavors were a delightful blend of spices and textures, a fitting end to an unforgettable adventure. As we made our way back to Beijing, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s experiences. The Great Wall Hike had exceeded my expectations in every way, offering a perfect blend of history, nature, and adventure.
