- Ming Tombs (Ming Shishan Ling) - The Ming Dingling Mausoleum, the resting place of the Wanli Emperor and Empress of the Ming Dynasty, is one of the thirteen Ming tombs in Beijing that have been excavated. Construction of Dingling began in the twelfth year of Wanli (1584) and took six years to complete, with a total expenditure of eight million taels of silver. The emperor was just 28 years old when the tomb was built, and it was not officially opened until 1620, leaving it unused for 30 years. Dingling Tomb is among the three largest tombs of the Ming Tombs. Dingling Underground Palace is the only underground palace in the Ming Tombs that has been developed. It is the first imperial mausoleum to be excavated in a planned manner after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. More than 3,000 cultural relics of various kinds were unearthed in the underground palace, including four national treasures: the golden crown, the phoenix crown, the luminous pearl, and the three-colored Ming Dynasty artifacts.
