The Forbidden City, also known as the imperial museum, was built in 1420, covering an area of 720,000 square meters. It has more than 70 large and small palaces and more than 9,000 houses. As the largest and most complete palace-like building in the world, the Forbidden City was the residence of 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In October 1925, the Palace Museum was officially established and opened to the public, becoming a world cultural heritage site.
