Sipping History: A Rum Adventure in Bayamón
Drawn by the allure of legendary Caribbean rum, I ventured to Hacienda Santa Ana in Bayamón for an unforgettable tasting experience. Join me as I explore the rich history and flavors of Ron del Barrilito.
A Journey Through Time and Taste
As a former professional surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s rhythm and the stories it whispers. But this time, my journey took me inland to the historic Hacienda Santa Ana in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, home to the legendary Ron del Barrilito rum. The promise of tasting some of the finest rums in the Caribbean was too tempting to resist, and I was eager to explore the rich history and flavors that awaited me.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by the warm and welcoming staff, each one exuding a genuine passion for their craft. Our guide, Timmy, was a true storyteller, weaving tales of the distillery’s storied past with the same finesse as a seasoned surfer riding a perfect wave. His bilingual skills ensured that everyone, including us English-only speakers, felt included and engaged.
The tour began with a fascinating look at the distillery’s history, the oldest in Puerto Rico, and its deep connection to the island’s culture. As we wandered through the old stone buildings, surrounded by fields of sugar cane, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the legacy of craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.
Savoring the Spirits
The highlight of the experience was undoubtedly the rum tasting. As someone who appreciates the art of crafting a perfect wave, I found a similar artistry in the creation of Ron del Barrilito’s rums. The tasting included their entire range, from the fruit-forward Dos Estrellas to the exclusive Cuatro Estrellas, available only at the distillery.
Each sip was a journey in itself, revealing layers of flavor that danced on the palate like sunlight on the ocean’s surface. The crown jewel, the Cinco Estrellas, was a revelation, its complexity and depth akin to the most challenging yet rewarding surf breaks I’ve encountered.
Our bartender, whose name escapes me, was as engaging as Timmy, sharing insights into the handcrafted cocktails and even demonstrating a cinnamon flambé that added a touch of theatrical flair to the experience. I highly recommend trying the old-fashioned, a perfect blend of tradition and innovation.
A Perfect Ending
After the tasting, I took the opportunity to relax on the patio, sipping a second handcrafted drink while soaking in the serene views of the sugar cane fields. The setting was idyllic, a perfect blend of history and nature, much like the island life I cherish.
Reflecting on the experience, I realized that the Ron del Barrilito rum tasting was more than just an exploration of flavors; it was a celebration of Puerto Rico’s rich heritage and the people who keep its traditions alive. For anyone visiting the island, this is a must-do adventure that offers a deeper connection to the land and its stories.
As I made my way back to the coast, the taste of the rums lingered, a reminder of the day’s discoveries and the endless adventures that await in the Caribbean. Until next time, keep riding the waves of life and savoring every moment.
