A Rainy Day Adventure

When I first heard about the Ron del Barrilito Heritage Tour in Bayamón, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the history of Puerto Rican rum. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean and the stories it holds, and this tour promised a deep dive into the island’s rich heritage. Despite the rain, I was determined to make the most of this experience.

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and handed drink tokens to use at the bar while waiting for the tour to begin. I opted for a Mi Vada, while my partner chose the Ole Fashioned. The bartender’s skill was evident in every sip, and we found ourselves savoring the flavors as we settled into the laid-back atmosphere. It was then that I decided to inquire about the Mixologist Tour, hoping to add a little extra flair to my birthday celebration. To my delight, the staff accommodated us, and we were soon on our way to becoming mixologists for the day.

Mixing Magic with Super Mario

Our guide, affectionately known as Super Mario, was a charismatic and knowledgeable host. Armed with umbrellas, we embarked on a tour of the production and housing facility, learning about the age-old process that makes Ron del Barrilito so unique. The rain only added to the charm, creating a cozy ambiance as we explored the historical landmarks of Hacienda Santa Ana.

After the outdoor tour, it was time to roll up our sleeves and get creative. With ten of us in the group, each had their own space to experiment with mixing drinks. Mario’s detailed instructions guided us through crafting three exquisite cocktails: an old-fashioned, a piña colada, and a refreshing mystery drink. The experience was both educational and exhilarating, as we sipped and mixed our way through the session.

Savoring the Experience

As the mixing class came to an end, we were encouraged to sit back, relax, and enjoy our creations. The camaraderie among the group was palpable, and we found ourselves sharing stories and laughter with our newfound friends. It was a reminder of the simple joys of island life, where connections are made over shared experiences and a love for the ocean.

Before leaving, I took the opportunity to purchase a bottle of Ron del Barrilito, knowing it would be a cherished memento of this unforgettable day. I also heeded the advice to bring snacks, as the tour and mixing class left us with a hearty appetite. While the rain may have been unexpected, it only added to the adventure, making this a day to remember.
