Today, we will explore the village of Siurana, a quaint settlement located about two hours by car south of Barcelona. Siurana is steeped in tales of relentless sieges and seemingly impossible conquests.

Situated on an impregnable perch overlooking the Siurana River, it took the combined efforts of knights from four counties to conquer this small town. Its castle once guarded an impenetrable border and remained the last stronghold of the Reconquest in Catalonia until 1153. As we wander through the streets of Siurana and along its dramatic cliffs, we will uncover the history of this enchanting place and the tragic fate of its queen upon the arrival of the Christians.

Abdelazia, the Moorish queen, chose to leap from a precipice with her horse rather than submit to Christian rule. During our visit, we will learn about her story, and even today, the hoofprint of Abdelazia’s horse is still visible on the rock, a testament to its futile resistance before plunging into the void.

With Abdelazia’s tragic end, we will witness how the last Saracen stronghold in Catalonia ultimately fell.

We will also visit the town’s Romanesque church and enjoy the breathtaking views from the surrounding cliffs. Finally, we will take pleasure in strolling through its charming cobbled streets.

Our journey allows time for everything, whether on the way there or back to Barcelona. In the summer, we will have the chance to swim in the Siurana reservoir to cool off. This spot boasts clean, tranquil waters where you can engage in various water sports.

On our return to Barcelona, we will stop by a wine cooperative to savor some local wines and other homemade products typical of the region.
