Cooking Up Memories: A Family Paella Adventure in Barcelona

As a family travel writer, I was drawn to the idea of a paella cooking class in Barcelona, promising both fun and education for my kids. Join me as I share our delightful culinary adventure.

A Warm Welcome to Barcelona

Barcelona has always been a city that captures the imagination, with its vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and, of course, its delectable cuisine. As a family travel writer, I am always on the lookout for experiences that are not only fun but also educational for my children. So, when I heard about the Paella Cooking Class in Barcelona, I knew it was something we had to try.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a friendly Australian expat who had been living in Barcelona for 17 years. His warm welcome set the tone for the day, and we felt immediately at ease. The class began promptly with an introduction by Chef Simon, who would be our guide through this culinary adventure. His passion for food and teaching was evident from the start, and I knew we were in for a treat.

Exploring La Boqueria Market

Our first stop was the world-famous La Boqueria market, just a short walk from our starting point. The pace was leisurely, allowing us to soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the market. Chef Simon shared fascinating tidbits of history and travel tips along the way, which added an extra layer of depth to the experience.

At the market, Chef Simon’s expertise truly shone as he guided us through selecting the freshest ingredients for our paella. He taught us how to choose the best seafood, a skill that I found particularly valuable. My children were captivated by the bustling market and the array of colorful produce and seafood on display. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to learn about the importance of fresh ingredients in cooking.

Cooking and Sharing a Meal Together

Back at the GAB LAB, we donned our aprons and got to work. Chef Simon’s instructions were clear and engaging, making the cooking process enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their skill level. We started with some simple tapas and learned how to mix the perfect Sangria, a delightful treat for the adults.

The highlight, of course, was the paella. We prepared traditional seafood paella, as well as chicken and vegetarian versions to accommodate everyone’s preferences. Chef Simon’s guidance on preparing the fresh vegetables, chicken, and seafood was invaluable. I even learned how to clean a squid, a skill I never thought I’d acquire!

As we cooked, we bonded with the other participants, sharing stories and laughter. It was a heartwarming experience to see my children working together and making new friends. Once the paella was ready, we gathered around a family table to enjoy the fruits of our labor. The meal was delicious, and the almond cake dessert was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

This Paella Cooking Class was more than just a cooking lesson; it was a chance to connect with others and create lasting memories. Chef Simon and his team were exceptional hosts, and I would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Barcelona. It’s a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy a truly authentic Spanish experience.
