Exploring Montserrat: A Family Adventure in Catalonia

Eager to explore the rich history and culture of Catalonia, I embarked on the Montserrat Day Tour with my kids. This adventure promised a perfect blend of education, entertainment, and family bonding, and it did not disappoint.

A Journey to Montserrat: A Family Adventure

When I first heard about the Montserrat Day Tour and its promise of wine, food, and scenic views, I knew it was something I had to experience with my family. As a travel writer who focuses on family-friendly adventures, I am always on the lookout for activities that can entertain and educate both adults and children. This tour seemed to offer the perfect blend of history, culture, and fun, so I packed up my three kids and set off for a day of exploration.

The Journey Begins: From Barcelona to Montserrat

Our adventure began at the Barcelona Nord bus station, where we checked in at the Castlexperience office. The kids were excited, and I was relieved to find the charter bus comfortable and easy to locate. As we settled into our seats, our guide Leslie began an engaging talk about Barcelona’s history. Her humor and knowledge captivated not only me but also my children, who listened intently and asked questions. It was a great way to start the day, and I appreciated how Leslie made the history accessible to all ages.

Upon arriving at Montserrat, we were guided to the cogwheel train that would take us up the mountain. I must admit, I have a bit of a fear of heights, but the breathtaking views and the lively conversation with fellow travelers made the 12-minute ride enjoyable. My kids were thrilled by the train ride, and their excitement was contagious. It was a reminder of how travel can bring people together, even those with different fears and interests.

Exploring Montserrat: A Blend of Nature and Spirituality

Once at the top, our guide Delph led us through the bustling crowds to the monastery. Her attentiveness and clear instructions ensured that we stayed together, even in the busy environment. The basilica was a highlight of the tour, with its stunning simplicity and solemnity. My children were in awe, and I found myself appreciating the peaceful atmosphere. Delph’s insights into the history and significance of the site added depth to our visit, making it both educational and inspiring.

After exploring the monastery, we had some free time to enjoy traditional foods made by Montserrat monks and farmers. The kids loved trying new flavors, and I enjoyed the opportunity to relax and soak in the unique blend of nature, culture, and spirituality that Montserrat offers.

Wine, Food, and Family Fun at Oller del Mas

The second part of our tour took us to the Oller del Mas winery, set within a 10th-century castle. The bus ride down the mountain was smooth, and the anticipation of visiting a historic winery kept the kids entertained. At the winery, we were treated to a delightful spread of cheese, meat, bread, and pastries. While the wine tasting was more for the adults, the kids enjoyed learning about the winemaking process and exploring the vineyards.

Delph’s history lesson about the winery, built in 924, was fascinating. Her storytelling brought the past to life, and I could see my children absorbing the information with interest. Though we considered buying a case of wine, the shipping costs to the US were a bit steep. Nonetheless, the experience was enriching, and the memories we made were priceless.

As we bussed back to the Barcelona train station, I reflected on the day’s adventure. The Montserrat Day Tour had exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of education, entertainment, and family bonding. It’s a highly recommended experience for families looking to explore the rich history and culture of Catalonia while enjoying some quality time together.
