This is one of the most impressive tours on a Segway. Starting from Barceloneta Beach, participants will enjoy the beautiful coastline. This is one of Barcelona’s oldest and most beloved beaches, believed to have inspired Miguel de Cervantes for the setting of the fight between Don Quixote and the Knight of the White Moon.
Leaving the beach behind, the tour will proceed to the Old Port with its gothic buildings. The history of this place dates back to the 4th century BC when Barcelona was occupied by the Laietani. Barkeno, on Montjuïc, was their main settlement. However, Port Vell began its port activity in the 1st century AD when the Romans founded the colony Barcino. The current port was constructed as part of an urban renewal program before the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
The tour will stop in front of the Columbus Monument and view the famous boulevard, La Rambla. This tree-lined pedestrian mall stretches for 1.2 kilometers, connecting Plaça de Catalunya in the center with the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell. La Rambla forms the boundary between the quarters of Barri Gotic to the east and El Raval.
Next, the tour will move to the central Parc de la Ciutadella, a historical landmark of the city’s great expansion. The park’s history begins in 1714 during the War of the Spanish Succession when Barcelona was besieged for 13 months by the army of Philip V of Spain. The city fell, and to maintain control and prevent further rebellion, Philip V built the citadel of Barcelona. Hundreds of Catalonians were forced to work on its construction for three years, with the rest of the city providing financial backing. In 1841, the city’s authorities decided to demolish the fortress, which was despised by Barcelona’s citizens. The park was built for the World Fair in 1888.
The remainder of the tour will pass close to the Arc de Triomf, built as the main access gate for the 1888 Barcelona World Fair. Designed by Josep Vilaseca, it served as the principal exhibition entrance, featuring unique Mudéjar-style brickwork. At the top of the arch, the shields of the 49 Spanish provinces are presided over by the coat of arms of the city of Barcelona, encompassing Catalan culture and history.
