Banteay Chhmar - Banteay Chhmar Temple stands as one of Cambodia’s national treasures. Originating from the Angkorian period, it serves as a valuable and irreplaceable connection to the cultural heritage of the Khmer people. The temple complex is adorned with numerous Buddhist images and remarkable bas-reliefs depicting life during the Angkorian era, highlighting its significance.
For 800 years, the temple has largely remained undiscovered and untouched, with nature causing overgrowth and structural collapse. Unfortunately, recent times have witnessed several instances of severe looting. - Banteay Torp - Banteay Torp is a secluded temple situated 7.7 km south-southeast of Banteay Chhmar (approximately 11 kilometers by modern road). Its name translates to “the Citadel of the Army,” likely referencing the military garrison stationed there during the reign of King Jayavarman VII (r. 1181-1219). The exact purpose of the temple is unknown, but it may have been constructed either to celebrate the military’s recent victories or as the religious focal point of a garrison-city located in the area.

Banteay Chhmar is situated approximately 60 kilometers from Serey Sophoan and was built during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the 12th/13th century. The central temple once housed an image of Srindrakumaraputra (the Crown Prince), likely a son of Jayavarman VII. Before returning to Siem Reap, there will be a stop to visit Prasat Banteay Toap.
