Setting Sail in Style

The sun was high in the Baja California sky as I found myself boarding a luxurious double-decker catamaran for an afternoon of whale watching in Cabo San Lucas. As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours on the water, but this was a different kind of ocean adventure. The promise of witnessing the grandeur of humpback whales in their natural habitat was too enticing to pass up. With a small group of just 14 fellow adventurers, the atmosphere was intimate and relaxed, perfect for soaking in the sun and the sea.

Our journey began at the marina, where we were greeted with a champagne toast—a fitting start to what promised to be an unforgettable experience. As we cruised past the iconic Land’s End Arch, Lover’s Beach, and the bustling sea lion colony, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the natural beauty surrounding us. The catamaran was spacious, allowing us to explore various viewpoints and take in the stunning vistas of the Pacific coastline.

The Call of the Whales

Our guide, Jacob, was a true highlight of the trip. His passion for the ocean and its majestic inhabitants was infectious. As we ventured further into the Sea of Cortez, Jacob shared fascinating insights about the humpback whales, their migratory patterns, and their unique behaviors. With the catamaran’s hydrophone system, we were able to listen to the hauntingly beautiful songs of the whales beneath the waves. Although we didn’t spot as many whales as we had hoped, the ones we did see were breathtaking, breaching and playing in the water with a grace that belied their size.

As the afternoon wore on, we were treated to a delightful lunch of finger sandwiches and fresh fruit, accompanied by an open bar that kept the spirits high. The crew’s attentiveness and respect for the whales were commendable, ensuring that we maintained a safe distance and didn’t disturb these magnificent creatures. It was heartening to see a tour company that prioritized the well-being of the wildlife over mere entertainment.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water, I reflected on the day’s adventure. It was a reminder of the ocean’s vastness and the incredible life it harbors.
