Swimming with Pigs and Sharks: A Bahamian Adventure
When the opportunity to swim with pigs and nurse sharks in the Exuma Cays presented itself, I knew it was a must-do. Join me as I recount a day filled with breathtaking scenery, exotic wildlife, and the thrill of island exploration.
Setting Sail to Paradise
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I boarded the sleek powerboat, ready to embark on an adventure that promised to be as thrilling as it was serene. The Exuma Cays, a string of islands in the Bahamas, had long been on my bucket list, and the opportunity to swim with pigs and nurse sharks was too enticing to pass up. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but this was a new kind of aquatic adventure.
Our guides, Captain Rico, LJ, and Neil, welcomed us aboard with warm smiles and a promise of an unforgettable day. The boat was spacious and well-maintained, with a clean bathroom below deck—a small but appreciated detail for a day at sea. As we set off, the wind whipped through my hair, and the music set the perfect backdrop for the stunning scenery that unfolded around us. The ride was long and breezy, but the anticipation of what lay ahead kept my spirits high.
Encounters with Exotic Wildlife
Our first stop was Allen’s Cay, home to the Bahamian Rock Iguanas. These prehistoric-looking creatures were surprisingly friendly, and feeding them was a unique experience. The iguanas, with their vibrant scales, seemed to enjoy the attention as much as we enjoyed interacting with them.
Next, we made our way to Compass Cay Marina, where the nurse sharks awaited. I’ve surfed alongside many marine creatures, but swimming with these gentle giants was a different thrill altogether. The kids on board were particularly excited, and their laughter was infectious as they splashed around with the sharks. Our guides ensured we felt safe and informed, making the experience both exhilarating and educational.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Pig Beach at Big Major Cay. The swimming pigs, famous for their playful antics, did not disappoint. Watching them paddle through the crystal-clear waters was a sight to behold. Our guides taught us how to feed them, and it was amusing to see the pigs respond to commands like “sit.” The baby piglets stole the show with their cuteness, and I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos to capture the moment.
A Taste of Island Life
After a morning of adventure, we stopped for lunch at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club. The food was delicious, and the piña coladas were the perfect refreshment under the Bahamian sun. As we dined, I couldn’t help but reflect on the beauty of the Exumas and the joy of sharing this experience with fellow travelers.
Our journey continued with a visit to the site of Pablo Escobar’s sunken plane and the island where “Pirates of the Caribbean” was filmed. These stops added a touch of intrigue and history to our day, sparking the imagination of both young and old.
The final stop was a sandbar that seemed to float in the middle of the ocean. The water was so clear and inviting that I couldn’t resist diving in. The kids on board discovered conch shells and even a crab, their excitement a reminder of the simple joys of exploration. As the day came to a close, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty and adventure.
The Exuma Cays tour was more than just a day trip; it was a journey into a world where nature and adventure intertwine seamlessly. For anyone seeking a unique island experience, I can’t recommend it enough. Exuma Adventure
