Pigs, Paradise, and Pure Bliss: My Day at Sandy Toes, Bahamas
When I heard about the chance to swim with pigs in the Bahamas, I knew I had to experience it for myself. Join me as I recount my unforgettable day at Sandy Toes on Rose Island, where snorkeling, beachside relaxation, and charming pig companions made for an adventure like no other.
Setting Sail to Rose Island
The sun was just beginning to rise as I made my way to the pickup point near the Atlantis, right next to the lively Margaritaville restaurant. The anticipation of the day ahead was palpable, and I could feel the familiar thrill of adventure coursing through my veins. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but the allure of swimming with pigs was a new kind of excitement.
The boat ride to Rose Island was a breezy 20-30 minutes, with the crew pointing out celebrity-owned mansions along the way. The turquoise waters sparkled under the morning sun, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the life I lead, split between surfing competitions and writing about the best beach adventures. The Caribbean has always been my playground, and today was no exception.
Snorkeling and Starfish
Upon arrival at Sandy Toes, the first order of business was snorkeling. The ocean was calling, and I couldn’t resist diving in. The underwater world was teeming with life, and I was lucky enough to spot a graceful sea turtle gliding by. Our guide, a friendly local with a deep knowledge of the sea, found some starfish and sea cucumbers, allowing us to hold them and snap a few photos. It was a magical experience, one that reminded me of why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place.
After snorkeling, it was time to relax and enjoy a drink from the open bar. The atmosphere was laid-back and social, with fellow travelers sharing stories and laughter. The beach was a paradise, with its powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. I found a hammock and let the gentle sway lull me into a state of pure bliss.
Swimming with Pigs and Island Life
The highlight of the day was, of course, swimming with the pigs. These charming creatures, mostly rescues from slaughterhouses in the U.S., were brought out every half hour, giving everyone a chance to interact with them. They were well-trained and seemed genuinely happy, splashing around in the water and posing for photos. It was a heartwarming sight, and I couldn’t help but smile at their playful antics.
Lunch was a delicious spread of grilled chicken, hot dogs, pasta salad, and more, enjoyed with a view of the picturesque Lower Harbour. Afterward, I explored the island further, visiting the peacocks, chickens, and even some baby goats and pigs. The staff at Sandy Toes were welcoming and passionate about their work, making the experience all the more enjoyable.
As the day came to a close, I found myself reluctant to leave. Rose Island had captured my heart, and the memories of swimming with pigs and snorkeling in the vibrant waters would stay with me long after I returned to my laid-back life in the Caribbean. Until the next adventure, I’ll be dreaming of Sandy Toes and the magic of island life.
