A Whale of a Time in the Azores

The Azores had been calling my name for quite some time, and when I heard about the Whale Watching Tour with a side of snorkeling at the Princess Ring Islet, I knew it was time to answer. As someone who spends a good chunk of my life riding waves and exploring the ocean’s wonders, the idea of getting up close and personal with the majestic creatures of the sea was irresistible. So, I packed my bags, kissed my partner goodbye, and set off for an adventure that promised to be as thrilling as it was relaxing.

The day began with a warm welcome at the Marina of Vila Franca do Campo, where our guide, Maria, briefed us on the cetaceans we might encounter. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and as we boarded the boat, the anticipation was palpable. The ocean was calling, and we were ready to answer. Within minutes of setting sail, we found ourselves surrounded by a pod of black-spotted dolphins. Having lived near the beach for most of my life, I’ve seen my fair share of dolphins, but never in such numbers. It was a breathtaking sight, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such beauty.

After a morning filled with dolphin sightings and the thrill of the chase, we returned to shore for a well-deserved lunch. Terra Azul had arranged for us to dine at a charming seafront restaurant, and the meal was nothing short of spectacular. We feasted on Azorean cheese, fresh triggerfish, and the most delightful Queijadas for dessert. As I savored each bite, I couldn’t help but reflect on how the simple pleasures of life often bring the greatest joy. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore, the salty breeze, and the company of fellow adventurers made for a perfect midday respite.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we made our way back to the office to collect our snorkeling gear. The excitement of exploring the Princess Ring Islet was building, and I was eager to dive into the crystal-clear waters that awaited us.

The short boat ride to the islet was a thrill in itself, and as we approached, the natural beauty of the area took my breath away.
