Sightseeing Baku tour
Icherisheher Historical-Architectural reserve - The tour will begin at the main entrance of Icheri Sheher (Old City) called Double Gates. During the tour, you will see the Chain, Sailor, and Cat Houses, Bukhara and Multani Caravanserais, Juma Mosque, and Maiden Tower. The guide will explain the history of Icheri Sheher and its buildings mentioned above. Shirvanshah Palace, the pearl of Azerbaijan’s architectural heritage, was the former residence of the rulers of Shirvan, located in the heart of Baku. The complex includes the Divan-Khan courtyard, tomb, mosque from 1441, bathhouse, and the mausoleum of court scholar Seyid Yahya Bakuvi. Later, Bukhara caravanserai, constructed in the late 15th century over the trade highway of Icherisheher in Baku, will be visited. The caravanserai has a quadratic shape and salient portal, with an octagonal yard surrounded by balconies and personal premises – chapels along the perimeter. The octagonal yard was a special hall under the open sky where travelers and merchants gathered after daily commercial operations. The crossing arch connected in general style along the full perimeter of the internal space of the yard, forming the main part of the architectural composition. Restoration works in 1964 revealed the large-scale structure of the caravanserai against the background of surrounding buildings. Maiden Tower, often compared to the Eiffel Tower of Baku, was used as a fortress by the Shirvanshahs for defensive purposes in the 12th century. Its architectural plan consists of extraordinarily thick walls at the base, beginning at five meters in depth and gradually narrowing to four meters at the top. Today, the interior contains an interesting display of old photographs and a souvenir shop, with the highlight being the superb rooftop viewpoint surveying Baku Bay and the Old City. The views from the top are worth the climb, offering a sweeping panorama of the Old City, new skyscrapers on the hills, and the Caspian Sea.
Baku Boulevard - Baku Boulevard, also known as the National Seaside Park in Baku, Azerbaijan, is a favorite promenade for many city residents and visitors. It is the second largest in Europe after the park on the banks of the River Seine in Paris. Its establishment dates back more than 100 years, to a time when Baku’s oil barons built their mansions along the Caspian shore, and the seafront was gradually built up. Today, the National Seaside Park in Baku covers an area of 3,750 meters and is located on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. It starts at the National Flag Square and ends at Freedom Square. The Boulevard area includes a number of museums, cultural facilities, malls, and entertainment centers, including the modern panoramic amusement ride – the Devil’s Wheel, which offers a beautiful view over Baku Bay.
Dagustu Park (Upland Park) - Upland (Dagustu) Park, also known as ‘’Viewing Square’’ and earlier in the Soviet era as ‘’Sergei Kirov Park,’’ is one of the most favorite places in Baku to walk, rest, and enjoy the sea view. Here, you can relax by breathing fresh air, viewing the city, drinking tea in the Highland Park Café, and listening to classic lounge music. It’s the best place to relax, located right in the heart of Baku. We suggest visiting this park at night because of the amazing lighting on the stairs to Highland Park! During hot summer days and nights, you can feel cool and a bit windy here.
Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum - The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum presents different schools and techniques from around the entire country, covering various historical states and the development of carpet weaving. In August 2014, the museum got a luxurious new building in the shape of a rolled carpet, designed by Austrian architects Franz Janz and Walter Mari. Today, there are more than 14,000 exhibits, including rare carpets, exquisite jewelry, clothing, embroidery, delicate glass pieces, wood, and felt. The first floor of the museum has flat-weave carpets and various examples of applied arts, including bags and saddles for horses. The second floor features pile carpets from different regions in Azerbaijan, showcasing the unique patterns and designs of the country. The third floor is dedicated to modern designers, the history of the Carpet Museum, and a children’s room. The Carpet Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00-18:00, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00-20:00. The museum is closed on Mondays.
Nizami str. /Tarqovi - The next destination in the Baku city tour is Nizami Street. You will have 15-20 minutes to walk and see the beauty of the most central street in Baku, full of shops and nice restaurants. You will also see Fountain Square, full of magical fountains.
Fountain Square - Fountains Square is endlessly popular with strollers and forms Central Baku’s natural focus. The fountains for which it is named include one topped by shiny silvered spheres giving fish-eye reflections of the trees and stone facades. The beautiful statue-inlaid facade of the Nizami Literature Museum is also located here.
Gabala - Sheki tour
Juma Mosque - On the way from Baku to Gabala, we visit Juma Mosque in Shamakhi (or Friday Mosque), a popular tourist attraction. Unlike many mosques, entrance to Juma Mosque of Shamakhi is permitted even to non-Muslims. To enter, you need to remove your shoes, but walking barefoot is not a problem because the floor is covered with thick carpets. Women must cover their heads to enter the mosque, and free head covers are provided at the entrance, which must be returned upon exit.
Diri Baba Mausoleum - Diri Baba Mausoleum stands in a square located on a cliff. The building is two-storied. The first story has a hall with a passageway to an octahedral cupola from a small vestibule. Stairs leading to the hall of the second story have been carved into the cliff. A spherical cupola with a pointed top has squinches decorated with plant ornaments. The architecture of Diri Baba Mausoleum harmoniously fits into the picturesque surroundings of the building, with views against the background of rocks and greenery of trees. The mausoleum is a masterpiece of the architectural school of Shirvan and a beautiful creation of ancient masters. The monument is protected by the government.
Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum - At the foot of Gulistan Fortress is the Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum or “Seven Domes.” This is the Shamakhi tomb of Shirvan Dynasty rulers, where the notorious representatives of the Shirvan Dynasty were buried. The monument’s name is defined by the number of gravestones in the crypt. Today, the gravestones look like half-destroyed stone domes as if grown directly from under the ground in the middle of a deserted graveyard, creating a mysterious atmosphere.
Nohur Lake - Nohur Lake, located near the Gabala-Ismayilli-Baku motorway, is one of the natural attractions in Azerbaijan visited by international and local tourists. It is situated 5 km east of Gabala city, about 200 km from Baku. The lake is surrounded by the mountains called Yumuru, Goydag, and Gulluburun. The length of Nohur Lake is currently 1925 m, the width is 1355 m, and its total area is 240 ha. The maximum depth reaches 24 m, and the volume of water is about 16 million m3. It is situated 700 meters above sea level. Drive to Sheki. Overnight there.
Sheki City Tour - Ganja
Church of Kish - On the way, visit the first Albanian church in the Caucasus, dating back to the 1st century AD. Kish Albanian Church, a brilliantly renovated round-towered Albanian church in pretty Kish village, has been lovingly converted into a well-presented trilingual museum. It’s the best place to learn about mysterious Caucasian Albania, the Christian nation that once covered most of northern Azerbaijan.
Sheki Khan’s Palace - The Palace, built in 1762 as a summer residence for the Khan of Sheki, was constructed without using a single nail or glue. Inside, all the walls of the Palace are full of paintings, each with its own philosophical meaning. In the garden outside the palace, you will discover two plane trees that are both 500 years old.
Karvansaray - The “Caravanserai” historical complex in Sheki consists of two magnificent caravanserais, traditionally named “Yukhari” and “Ashaghi” caravanserai, meaning “Upper” and “Lower” Caravanserai in Azerbaijani. Construction of these caravanserais dates back to the 18th-19th centuries AD. The “Lower” caravanserai has a rectangular shape with a large inner yard in the center, where a pool is located. The total area of the caravanserai is 8000 m2, with dimensions of 55x85 meters. Four entries lead to the yard from all four corners of the buildings. There are 242 rooms in the lower caravanserai. Earlier, there were merchant stores and storage rooms in the coaching inn, while the first floor was intended for guests, with rooms available for lease. Each room had a manhole connected to the ground floor with a stepladder, which was very convenient for merchants who wanted to control the safety of their products at any time. Since 1988, the lower caravanserai has been used as a hotel complex for tourists, guests of the city, and local residents. There is a restaurant of national cuisine with 100 places functioning in the complex. The hotel offers luxury suites that comply with international standards.
Nizami Ganjavi Mausoleum - The first mausoleum at Nizami’s tomb was built in the 13th-14th centuries. In 1947, a new mausoleum was built, and the current building dates back to 1991. Near the mausoleum is a sculpture depicting the great poet surrounded by the characters of his works. An artificial lake and five fountains symbolize the five major poems of Nizami, known as the ‘Khamsa.’
Shah Abbas Mosque - Located in central Ganja and dating to 1606, Juma Mosque boasts a red-brick exterior and a large white dome. Sheykh Baheddin Mohammad Amil of the Persian Safavid Empire commissioned the mosque, which once had an adjoining madrassa. The two minarets were added later towards the end of the 18th century.
Bottle House - The Bottle House, a local icon in Ganja, Azerbaijan, is a perfect example of this synthesis. An entire house ostensibly constructed entirely out of glass bottles, this abode is unlike any most will ever see. The Bottle House is a private residence – there are no fees to take a look, but also no hours or official guided tours. That doesn’t stop numerous visitors and passers-by from coming to marvel at the feat of both engineering and creativity used to create it. Call it a collection or a work of art, but the closest description of this house is that it’s both. Visitors can support the maintenance costs of the house by shopping at the homemade souvenir stand under the porch whenever open.
Goygol (Blue Lake) & Maral Gol tour
Lake Goygol - The magical mountain lakes of Goygol National Park are as iconic to the Ganja region of Azerbaijan as the Maiden’s Tower is to Baku. Lake Goygol has appeared on stamps and in poetry, paintings, and songs. Yet for years, the area has been out of bounds to most visitors. Blue Lake (Goygol) - Due to an earthquake, parts of the Kapaz Mount collapsed and blocked the path of the Kürəkçay River. As a result of the diversion of water flow, a lake with pure mountain water was created, hence the name given signifying the purity of the water.
Absheron Tour - Ateshgah & Yanardag
Ateshgah - Fire Temple - At the Fire Temple, you will find out why Azerbaijan is called the land of fire by visiting the 17th-century fire temple - Ateshgah. The driver and guide will pick you up from the hotel at the specified time and drive directly to the Fire Temple. The temple is located in the southeastern part of the Surakhani settlement on the Absheron peninsula, 30 km from Baku. Ateshgah is a fire temple built in the 17th-18th centuries at the site of the eternal flames of natural gas. The earliest building of the temple dates back to 1713, and the central temple was built in 1810 by merchant Kanchanagara funds. It was sanctified by Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs at different times.
Yanardag State Historical, Cultural and Natural Reserve - After the Fire Temple, your last destination will be the Fire Mountain - Yanar Dag. This natural burning flame resulted from the emergence of natural gas at the foot of the hill. A hill that has been burning for approximately 4 millennia nonstop, even in times of rain and snow, with roots of the gas going as far as the Caspian Sea. Yanar Dag is located 25 km north of Baku, in Mehemmedi village. Since 2007, Yanar Dag has been declared a state-protected conservation area.
Gobustan Rock Arts & Mud Volcanoes
Gobustan Rock Art - Your tour will start with a car picking you up from the hotel. The first destination will be Gobustan, an archaeological monument located 56 km from the capital city, Baku. The artifacts and rock carvings were discovered in 1939-1940. As a result of the research, more than 3,500 human and animal paintings and various markings – petroglyphs were recorded, and 20 suburban shelters have been identified in this place. Mesolithic monuments (medieval stone) are mostly exhibited in the reserve. There are many caves and springs carved by primitive men on the walls of caves, rocks, and stony lumps. First, you will visit the Gobustan Museum to get better insights into the history of the area, then you will go by car to the Rock Mountain to see the real carvings.
Mud Volcanoes - Later, the tour will continue to the Mud Volcano, which is not far from Gobustan National Museum. Azerbaijan holds the first place in the world for the number of mud volcanoes. About 300 mud volcanoes are found in Azerbaijan – at the shore, in the sea, and on islands. During this trip, you will get a great chance to see these amazing active volcanoes from a very close distance. After spending 15 minutes around the volcanoes, you will be transferred back to your car.
