Hailing from the 12th century, L’Isle sur la Sorgue, a historic town encircled by a watercourse, was originally erected on stilts over a marshland by fishermen. Fast forward to the 18th century, the town was bustling with silk and paper factories powered by 70 large water wheels lining its canals, which are still visible as you wander through the town. Presently, L’Isle stands as the ‘Venice of Provence’, a haven for over 300 antique vendors and a brilliant starting point for any journey through the Vaucluse. Then there’s Fontaine de Vaucluse, home to Europe’s largest natural spring. It sits just outside the town and generates a fast-flowing river that meanders through the village, where a selection of riverside cafés and shops are found. A must-see is Avignon, renowned for its remarkable ecclesiastical structures, particularly the World Heritage listed Palais des Papes, famous for its magnificent renaissance frescoes. While in Avignon, a visit to Pont d’Avignon is included, though a tour of Palais des Papes isn’t.
