Ellora Caves - The Ellora Caves, meticulously carved between the 4th and 9th centuries, represent the Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions. As one of Maharashtra’s most captivating archaeological sites, Ellora dates back to the Rashtrakuta dynasty, approximately 1,500 years ago, and exemplifies Indian rock-cut architecture. There are 34 caves in total, with 12 being Buddhist, 17 Hindu, and 5 Jain. This site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, and Cave No. 16, famously known as the Kailash Temple, is a World Heritage Site carved from a single monolithic rock.
Bibi Ka Maqbara - Located about 3 km from the city, Bibi Ka Maqbara is the resting place of Aurangzeb’s wife, Rabia-ud-Durrani. It resembles the Taj Mahal in Agra and is often referred to as the Mini Taj of the Deccan due to its similar design. The Maqbara is set in the center of a spacious, formally planned Mughal garden featuring axial ponds, fountains, water channels, broad pathways, and pavilions. Behind the mausoleum, there is a small Archaeological Museum.
Aurangabad - Ajanta Caves Tour from Aurangabad (Approximately two hours one way) (B)
Ajanta Caves - Ajanta is situated 107 kilometers from Aurangabad and 60 kilometers from Jalgaon. This group of 32 Buddhist caves is near a medieval village of the same name and is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. Since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The thirty rock-cut caves at Ajanta, carved into a cliff face, are either Chaityas (chapels) or Viharas (monasteries). The cave walls feature paintings, many of which still retain their original vibrant colors. The outer walls are adorned with exquisitely crafted sculptures. The Buddhist-themed paintings at Ajanta depict the life of Lord Buddha and stories of his previous earthly incarnations.
Aurangabad
Aurangabad Caves - Located 5 km away, nestled among the hills, are 12 Buddhist caves dating back to the 3rd century AD. The Tantric influence is evident in the iconography and architectural designs of these caves. Visitors can also enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the impressive Maqbara (mausoleum) from this vantage point.
