Crossing the Atlas: A Journey Begins

The thrill of adventure called once again, and this time it was the Sahara Desert that beckoned. With a group of fellow thrill-seekers, I embarked on a 3-day tour from Marrakech to the Merzouga Desert, a journey that promised to be as exhilarating as it was unforgettable. Our first day was a whirlwind of sights and sounds as we left the bustling city of Marrakech behind and ventured into the majestic High Atlas Mountains. The Tizi n’Tichka Pass, standing at 2,260 meters, offered breathtaking views that seemed to stretch on forever. Each twist and turn of the road revealed new vistas, each more stunning than the last.

Our first major stop was the iconic Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed village that seemed to rise out of the desert like a mirage. Walking through its ancient kasbahs, I could almost hear the echoes of history whispering through the narrow streets. Our guide regaled us with tales of the village’s storied past and its role in cinematic history, making it a highlight of the day. However, the day ended on a less thrilling note at the Rose Mgouna hotel in the Dades Valley. The accommodations were less than stellar, with outdated facilities and lackluster food that left much to be desired. We kicked off our desert adventure with a heart-pounding quad bike ride across the dunes, the adrenaline coursing through our veins as we raced against the setting sun. As the day faded into night, we mounted camels and made our way to the luxury Berber camp. The tents were a welcome surprise, equipped with air conditioning to ward off the chill of the desert night. Dinner was a delightful affair, followed by an evening of music and dancing around the campfire, led by the charismatic Hassan. It was a night to remember, filled with laughter and camaraderie under a canopy of stars.

The final day of our adventure began in the pre-dawn darkness, as we mounted our camels once more to witness the sunrise over the Sahara. As the first rays of light crept over the horizon, painting the dunes in shades of gold and pink, I felt a sense of awe that words could scarcely capture. The journey back to Marrakech was long, but the camaraderie of our group and the infectious energy of our guide, Ismail, made it an enjoyable experience. His humor and enthusiasm kept our spirits high, turning what could have been a tedious drive into a lively and engaging journey.
