Aswan High Dam - The High Dam is a monumental achievement of the 20th century in Egypt, containing 18 times the material of the Great Pyramid of Giza. It supplies water and electricity to Egypt and protects the nation from the Nile’s potentially devastating floods.
Aswan Botanical Garden - Kitchener’s Island, located west of Elephantine Island, was bestowed upon Lord Horatio Kitchener in the 1890s during his tenure as the commander of the Egyptian army. With a passion for exotic plants and palms, Kitchener transformed the island into the exquisite Aswan Botanical Gardens, importing various species from the Far East, India, and Africa. Spanning 6.8 hectares, the gardens are a haven for numerous bird species and a diverse array of plant life. Despite some loss of its past splendor, the towering trees remain an impressive spectacle, especially in the gentle light of early evening when the air is perfumed with sandalwood. To experience a quieter visit, it’s best to avoid Fridays when the gardens become crowded with families enjoying picnics and music.
