The entrance to the park is situated 25km northeast of Arusha city, 58 km from Moshi Town, 35 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), and 300km from Serengeti National Park. Although the park is compact (542 sq kilometers), it boasts a diverse range of breathtaking landscapes across three unique regions. To the west, the Meru Crater channels the Jekukumia River, with the summit of Mount Meru perched along its edge. The Ngurdoto Crater in the southeast is a grassland area. The shallow, alkaline Momella Lakes in the northeast exhibit various algal hues and are renowned for their variety of wading birds.
Despite its modest size, the park is abundant in wildlife diversity, offering excellent game viewing opportunities comparable to the larger parks in the Northern circuit. Visitors can encounter a variety of animals including giraffes, Cape buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, the black-and-white colobus monkey, the blue monkey, flamingos, elephants, and lions. While leopard sightings are uncommon in the park, it is home to more than 400 documented bird species. Birdwatching enthusiasts will appreciate species like the Narina Trogon and the Bar-tailed Trogon. The park also contains a higher concentration of forest species than found in most other regions of the world.
