Highlights
  • Moshi - In the morning we drive to Olpopongi in West Kilimanjaro region. Olpopongi is 74 kilometers from Moshi. Our two hours drive will take us through the beautiful outback of West Kilimanjaro. Depending on the season you can see zebras and elephants. On clear days you will have amazing views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. We reach Olpopongi before lunch time, where we will be welcomed by the local Maasai with a traditional welcome song and dance. We take a walk around the village and you will check-in your hut for the night. The guides will then take you to the precious little museum, where you will learn about the history, social organization and tools of Maasai people.

In-between our lesson a traditional Tanzanian lunch will be served to give you enough energy for an exciting afternoon. Later in the afternoon we visit a midwife and herbalist in one of the huts. You will learn about the everyday life in a Maasai village. After this very spiritual meeting we have a short break which you can use for some jeweler shopping or coffee and tea break. Additional Information

Exploring Customs, Traditions, and Way of Life:
Tanzania is a cultural melting pot, home to 126 unique ethnic groups. The Maasai, undoubtedly the famous and most captivating among them, casts a spell on us with their distinctive practices and attire. In ‘Olpopongi’, an entirely traditional Maasai settlement, we spend a fascinating day immersed in the tribe’s life. Experience the awe-inspiring dance, traditions, customs, and rites of the Maasai as we tour the village.
The tribe represents a small fraction, merely 0.7 percent, of Kenya’s populace, and a similar amount reside in Tanzania. The Maasais speak the Maa language, a Nilotic ethnic dialect from their roots in North Africa’s Nile region. The Samburu tribe shares the closest resemblance to the Maasai in terms of language and cultural preservation.

Tanzania Maasai Tour - Our Maasai experience in Tanzania was unforgettable and far too short. One day we will return and see what else this wonderful country has to offer. We travelled with the Burigi Chato Safaris company LTD and combined the trip with Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater.

Maasai the East African Real Culture - When you talk about East Africa people and their culture, you talk about Maasai people, the Maasai are found in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda that’s why they are termed as the icon of the east African culture. I did a tour this year and I was lucky, I visited both Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda though I needed to confirm my covid negativity for Uganda and Kenya. For both country I did the Maasai tour but I loved more for the Tanzania side because the tour also included overnight in Maasai Bomas (buildings).

Olpopongi Maasai village tour was unforgettable experience - We visited the Olpopongi village for unforgettable experience. We were happy to see and play with their kids. We tried on some clothes and took pictures with beads it is interesting how some cultures live in this world. We are so different and yet some with even less have smiles on their faces especially the kids in this village. I took a message that changed me on this day and I dare others to go visit the village and see what it reflects to your life’s story. In the end there is a tip box which each person can put what they feel like. You can also buy some ornaments that are locally made.
