Visitors can expect to see many of Africa’s iconic animals, with the tree-climbing lions being a special highlight. These majestic predators rest in acacia trees, practically inviting photographs.
Bird enthusiasts will find Lake Manyara a true delight, with a vast array of birds on display. Even beginners will be amazed by large flamingo flocks, soaring birds of prey, and the vividly colored lilac-breasted roller.
Guests will then retire to their chosen accommodation for dinner and a restful night’s sleep.
Karatu - Ndutu Area
Serengeti National Park - An early breakfast is planned, as a day full of exploration and adventure awaits!
The day begins with a scenic drive towards the Serengeti. Along the way, guests will pass through the misty rainforests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where they might spot cape buffalo, baboons, or even elephants and leopards in the dense foliage.
It’s nearly a four-hour drive to the Serengeti park gates, but guests can choose to break up the journey with one or both of the following optional activities:
• Oldupai Gorge Museum: Known as the Cradle of Mankind, the Oldupai Gorge Museum showcases some of the oldest evidence of human habitation ever discovered. Visitors can see ancient fossil evidence, learn about human history, and enjoy the stunning views of this stark gorge landscape.
• Maasai boma visit: Guests can visit one of the renowned Maasai bomas, where they can witness (and participate in) traditional Maasai dance, tour an authentic Maasai village, and shop for souvenirs at the local market.
Both activities incur an additional cost. Guests should consult their safari expert to add them to their itinerary.
Guests will then proceed to the Ndutu region of the park, where tens of thousands of young wildebeest take their first steps on the long journey to the distant Maasai Mara.
There will be time for an afternoon game drive through the region before checking into the accommodation.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Ndutu
Ndutu Lake - Guests will rise before dawn to enjoy a sunrise game drive along the shores of Lake Ndutu. As far as the eye can see, thousands of animals graze on the lush grass.
They will then head to the nearby Gol Plains, where they can spot predators like cheetahs and lions in action while it’s still cool enough for them to hunt.
From there, it’s on to Lake Masek, a freshwater lake home to water birds and hippopotamuses. The surrounding undergrowth attracts elephants, giraffes, and antelopes, making it a fantastic spot to capture photos of these magnificent creatures against a unique backdrop.
Guests will then venture into the Serengeti proper for a game drive. Here, they can spot graceful giraffes, leaping antelopes, foraging hyenas, sleek cheetahs, elusive leopards, and the majestic lions that symbolize Africa.
Ndutu - Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Conservation Area - After an early breakfast, guests will collect their picnic lunch boxes and set out for a full day of game viewing in the Ngorongoro Crater. The Ngorongoro Crater is a deep, volcanic crater and the largest unbroken caldera in the world. Approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) across, 600 meters (1,969 feet) deep, and 300 square kilometers (186 square miles) in area, the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking natural wonder. Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while lions bask in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater’s ridge, tall Maasai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures, living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries.
Dinner and overnight stay will be on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater or in nearby Karatu Town, depending on the standard and type of accommodation requested from the available options.
