Mount Meru Zara Trip - It was an exhausting but unique experience with great people and alot of great food. Even with the exercise i won‘t loose some weight here. Saw some buffaloes und giraffes and much more beautiful animals on our hikes. Always felt safe with the great Ranger Joseph with us. Overall I recommend to experience it on your own.

Beautiful Mont Meru trek - Great ascent, very well organized with very good meals. Cabila and her team were very careful. The explanations were clear, they were always available, which allowed us to reach serenely the summit of the Méru, with a sunrise facing Kilimanjaro that we are not about to forget.

Profesional company - Before the trek the office in Moshi Tanzania as well as the Canada contact point provided excellent service on our short term requests and questions. During the trek Zara tours showed high professional level among other things our guide checked oxygen saturation and pulse as well as asked us “health questions” every evening. Meru is a hard trek with technical complexity our guide had not been on the mountain for 3 years (normally he was doing Kili). But despite this he guided us very confident and always knew the route as well as kept an eye on our individual resource situation. The rest of the team at the mountain from Zara was great as well: served us very nice food, ensured warm water mornings and when arriving so we could wash, carried the stuff we needed during nights. Our assistant Richard was always there ready to support and give a smile. Thank you yo all! To you considering to trek Meru: set your limits before you start. Along with your guide so he know your goals. Do you want to reach the summit at all costs? Do you want to have a tour where you do not get too exhausted maybe only heading for Peacock Point? Make it VERY clear for your guide. If not, he will push you to the summit the very best he can. The summit is the success criteria for him. And remember: you also need resources for the way down. It is at least 2000 altitude meters

Mt Meru--super tough - I want to give an honest assessment of my 4-day Mt. Meru summit trek. On the one hand--the staff that accompanied me was fantastically attentive to my needs on this not-easy climb. And I mean, that my guide Mushin Said was there--right next to me--carrying my pack, ready to tie a loose shoe lace, or zip up an underarm zipper if I merely raised my arm to do it myself. I also wound up with a very personable ranger to accompany me (and one other solo traveler) who was a fount of wisdom and humor (he didn't come to the summit, but waited at the summit-day base camp. We ran into some rain pre-and-post summit--which wasn't great--but it meant that summit day was considerably warmer for us. We summitted on a cloudy day--but had a window of sunshine for the summit itself. The huts were very nice for what they were and weren't crowded, so I got a private room each night. A big plus--but luck dependent. HOWEVER--our summit day was freaking 18 hours long!! With 16 hours of actual hard hiking. I'm not a star athlete, but am in more than reasonable shape, trained for this for months, and this day wiped me out. We were up at 12 am--hiking by 1 am--summitted a bit after sunrise around 7 am. Not easy. And then we returned to Saddle camp with a tiring descent which took around another 6 hours. If we had ended there--that would have been a tough 12 hour day. But we had to descend another 1000m in rain and mud (need to watch every step) to a lower and last camp. This was like a four hour death march. (Summit day=1000m climb, 2000m descent). My thighs were toast from the descent and I was just exhausted from lack of sleep and the need to concentrate on every step through the slippery mud. Reminded me of boot-camp in my 20s. Was it worth it? Maybe. I asked my guide why we couldn't stay at the higher camp and he told me that the park only allowed one night at 3500m--due to concerns about altitude sickness. (A chief ranger at the park entrance where we waited to get picked up later told me that this wasn't true and we could have booked 2 nights). We got jeeped out from our last camp at no additional cost. I'm not sure if I could have walked down another 4-5 hours/1000m that last day. So--this is a HARD trek. My guide consistently said it was much harder than Kili (aside from the fact that Kili is colder). I think that Zara might reconsider letting hikers stay at 3500m for 2 nights--or admit that the summit day is a killer. What else? Food was fine, served with a smile and care. Daily wash-wash warm basin of water also offered (take a shower bag as I did and you'll be glad you did). I opted to not stay in Zara's own hotel pre--and post--hike. (I stayed with locals--eye-opening into Africa experience).
