The Maasai tribe is the predominant tribe in Arusha, and visiting an authentic village is a must! Upon arrival, the women of the tribe will warmly welcome visitors with dancing and singing, and everyone is encouraged to join in. Following this, a guide will provide a tour of the village, offering insights and answering any questions about their culture and traditions. Typically, guests are then invited to enjoy a cup of chai (tea) with the tribe’s elders, providing another opportunity to ask questions. This experience is often followed by the traditional goat slaughter, where guests are invited to taste fresh goat’s blood, believed by the Maasai to promote health and strength. For those who prefer, they can wait for the goat to be barbecued and enjoy the meat instead.

The day usually concludes with the men’s dance, showcasing who can jump the highest, and they certainly can jump! Visitors are welcome to participate in this dance as well. At some point during these activities, lunch will be served. Depending on the desired length of the visit and budget, if there is a market day, guests can choose to end their day shopping, where many Maasai gather to trade goods, especially cattle. This is a great opportunity to test bargaining skills with the locals. This experience is not to be missed!
