The Rongai Trailhead is the only route on Kilimanjaro that starts from the north side and traverses the mountain. It is less frequented by trekkers. It merges with the Marangu Route during the final ascent to the summit on the fourth day, but otherwise, few people are encountered along the way. This path offers a close view of the Mawenzi volcano, Kilimanjaro’s second highest peak, and the stunning saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peak.
Due to the challenging terrain and limited time for acclimatization, physical fitness is crucial for enjoying and succeeding in this trek. Each day presents a variety of vegetation and scenery changes, owing to the increasing altitude and decreasing precipitation. Accommodation is provided in mountain tents, and meals are served in mess tents. Toilet tents with convenient and hygienic portable flush toilets are available at all camps.
