Tarangire National Park is situated 118 km (a 2-hour drive) southwest of Arusha, covering an area of 2,850 sq km. The park features sparse vegetation with baobab and acacia trees and boasts the highest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem. It is renowned for its large elephant population, with over 300 elephants recorded. Unique to Tarangire are dry-country antelopes like the stately fringe-eared oryx and the peculiar long-necked gerenuk, often seen during game viewing. Activities include guided walking safaris and game drives, with common sightings of zebras, buffaloes, impalas, giraffes, Kori bustards, and Tarangire pythons.

Tarangire to Southern Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park - • 7:00 am: Early breakfast at Fig Big Tree.
• 8:00 am: Pickup for a 4-hour drive to Southern Serengeti.

The Southern/Central/Seronera Valley, called “Serengit” by the Maasai, meaning the land of endless plains, features vast savannah grasslands that provide grazing areas for wildlife like wildebeests, zebras, Coke’s hartebeests, waterbucks, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles, and impalas. The Seronera Valley is dotted with acacia vegetation forming group structures known as kopjes, which offer vantage points for predators to spot prey and serve as refuges for hyraxes, pythons, and lizards. African leopards are commonly seen here.

The Northern Zone (Lobo Area) features dense rainforest, woodland, and mountainous vegetation. The Mara River, home to large Nile crocodiles, blocks wildlife migrating to Kenya’s Maasai Mara. The area is also home to elephants, giraffes, and dik-diks.

The park’s fertile volcanic soil supports diverse habitats. Lake Makat (soda lake) is home to various bird species. Ngorongoro is the only park in Tanzania where you can see the Big Five year-round, often in a single day. The park is also known for Maasai families living in circular homesteads called bomas and is a key site for understanding early human evolution, pioneered by Mary and Louis Leakey. Wildlife sightings include wildebeests, gazelles, golden jackals, bat-eared foxes, hippos, East African wild dogs, African leopards, ungulates, waterbucks, buffaloes, elands, and servals. Giraffes, oribis, topis, spotted hyenas, African leopards, and cheetahs are rarely seen.

It is the only area in Tanzania with over 500 documented bird species. The lake is home to various fish families, and 180 butterfly species have been recorded. Common wildlife sightings include wildebeests, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, zebras, bushbucks, waterbucks, bush elephants, giraffes, baboons, warthogs, hippos, African wild cats, African civets, spotted hyenas, honey badgers, black-backed jackals, tree-climbing lions, and leopards.

Despite its small size (542 sq km), the park offers varied landscapes in three distinct areas. The Meru Crater in the west funnels the Jekukumia River, with Mount Meru’s peak on its rim. Ngurdoto Crater in the southeast is grassland, while the shallow alkaline Momella Lakes in the northeast have varying algae colors and are known for wading birds. The park is rich in wildlife, offering good game sightings similar to larger parks in the Northern Circuit. Common animals include giraffes, Cape buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, flamingos, elephants, and lions. Leopards are rarely seen. Over 400 bird species are documented, with highlights for birders including the Narina trogon and bar-tailed trogon. The park also boasts many forest species found nowhere else in the world.

Great Safari - Great company, friendly people and awesome safari. We took 7 day safari with my wife and have been happy that we chose those guys. I was suspicious and afraid initially, but recognized soon that I could trust them They suggested to meet us at airport for free and drop to our hotel (hotel guys asked for $60 in comparison). I made mistakes, and actually was short on 1 day, but Bernard helped, updated schedule so we have been able to start safari day earlier. All team was awesome, nice food, funny, friendly guides. We enjoyed so much that experience. Guide Simba new a lot about animals, and predicated places, behavior of lions, so we have been faster and earlier then other groups. We have been few meters away from lions, giraffes, elephants, etc. Of course, don't achieve US level of service, food, hotels :) but rooms have been clean, got water, clean beds. 3 days in a tents, that we have been scared initially, but in reality those have been most interesting nights. Zebra, Buffalo came literally next to our tents :). So overall, highly recommend, plus prices - one of the cheapest (and we have been 2 in a car for 3 days, and 4 people for test of the trip)
