Additional Information

Often referred to as the ‘Whiskey’ route, the Machame track is the preferred route by many ascending Kilimanjaro due to its exquisite scenic views. Despite its popularity, this trail is notoriously arduous, steep, and challenging because of its condensed itinerary, so it tends to appeal more to adventurous individuals or those experienced with high altitude hiking or backpacking.

The journey begins at the southern base of Kilimanjaro, with a quick car ride from Moshi to the Machame Gate entrance. The trail then guides climbers through a vibrant rainforest and onto the Shira Plateau. At this juncture, several routes merge. From here, the path swerves to the east, passing under the Southern Ice Field of Kilimanjaro following a route known as the Southern Circuit, with the summit assault originating from Barafu. The descent is then made via the Mweka route.

Companies that specialize in Kilimanjaro expeditions offer this route as a seven-day group journey or as a seven-day private excursion.

A sporting challenge in a dream setting. - We did this route without training. My partner and I had already hiked at high altitudes in Peru but just for the day. It is certain that we must be in good health, we succeeded by scrupulously following the advice of the guide (walk slowly, but anyway we could not really be faster!) but I recommend to do this hike but I think it is desirable to train a little. The first 2 days are rather easy, in the tropical forest, we had a lot of rain on the way of the second day. The 3rd day was one of the most difficult with the assenscion of the summit. this is the first acclimatization where we exceed 4000.We had some doubts about our ability to succeed in the challenge: symptom of mountain sickness, tiredness of the weather, I found days 4 and 5 rather easy, but people with vertigo, must be disturbed by the Barranco wall. The last day is by far the most trying. But it offers the recompence of the success of the summit hike, the landscape is magnificent. Emotions are intense, tear of joys, pride, pleasure of doing this feat as a couple. We also forget that we have to go back down, the descent is difficult, especially because you are tired. I recommend having 2 pairs of extremely waterproof shoes and one designed for extreme temperatures -20 ° C. in general it is essential to be well equipped. Humanly, it was great to share moments with the guides, guide assistants and porters. Our chef's food was delicious We had a group of different levels, we had to split the group into 2 because there were people too fast for us ...

Amazing Trip! - It was just amazing! Best trip of my life so far. Had an amazing experience. Started at the machame gate with a bit of rain, and walked through an amazing rainforest upwards. The weather got a lot better the days after. The landscape on the machame route is just phenomenal. As we hiked up the mountain we had lots of different types of landscape from rain Forrest to alpine dessert and in the end far up the mountain the glacier. I choose this route first of all cause I heard that the nature on this walk was very impressive and second of all all really wanted to sleep in a tent and hear the sounds and noises of the wild nature of the mountain. I would definetly recommend this route!! Had an awesome guide and the beat crew, without them we wouldn't have made it. And one thing I almost forgot, you have to climb the breakfast wall! I was so scared first but it was such an awesome experience and I am so happy I chose this route and climbed the wall. Best vacation ever!

The hike of a lifetime - A great experience, one I will never forget. The hike to Stella and Uhuru peak was one of the highlights of my life. I’d recommend you take all your warm clothes with you since your entire rucksack will be needed for the final night!
