Often referred to as the ‘Whiskey’ route, the Machame track is the preferred route by many ascending Kilimanjaro due to its exquisite scenic views. Despite its popularity, this trail is notoriously arduous, steep, and challenging because of its condensed itinerary, so it tends to appeal more to adventurous individuals or those experienced with high altitude hiking or backpacking.
The journey begins at the southern base of Kilimanjaro, with a quick car ride from Moshi to the Machame Gate entrance. The trail then guides climbers through a vibrant rainforest and onto the Shira Plateau. At this juncture, several routes merge. From here, the path swerves to the east, passing under the Southern Ice Field of Kilimanjaro following a route known as the Southern Circuit, with the summit assault originating from Barafu. The descent is then made via the Mweka route.
Companies that specialize in Kilimanjaro expeditions offer this route as a seven-day group journey or as a seven-day private excursion.
