In a short time, you will be immersed in the magnificent mountain forest with its huge jungle trees, ferns, moss carpets, and lianas. With luck, you will observe the black and white colobus monkeys in the treetops. After about 5 - 6 hours, you will reach the day’s destination - Machame Camp. Often referred to as the ‘Whiskey’ route, the Machame trail is Kilimanjaro’s most frequented path due to its stunning aesthetics. The trail is known for its strong difficulty level as it is quite steep and can be strenuous especially since it doesn’t allow a lot of time for acclimatization. Hence, it is usually recommended for thrill-seekers or those with experience in high altitude hiking or backpacking. The trail commences from the south side of Mount Kilimanjaro, with a brief drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. It then leads adventurers through the rainforest up to the Shira Plateau, which is a convergence point for many of Kilimanjaro’s routes. The trail goes eastward, passing beneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field along a path known as the Southern Circuit, before reaching the summit from Barafu. Descent is through the route called Mweka. The Machame route is offered as a seven-day group journey or a six-day private hike by Kilimanjaro Operators. The six-day variant merges days four and five, moving from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp without a stopover at Karanga.
