At the mountain’s base lies Lake Natron, reputed to be the sole breeding ground for the endangered Lesser Flamingoes residing in the Great Rift Valley. It is considered the world’s most crucial breeding site for these flamingoes, supporting 75 percent of their global population.
This soda lake is located at the lowest point of the Great Rift Valley in East Africa and is relatively shallow, with a depth of less than three meters, and its width fluctuates with the water level. The lake mud temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius, where evaporation leads to high alkalinity. The lake’s highly alkaline environment is believed to protect flamingo nests from predators.
