Highlights
  • RanaSella - Asturiana School of Canoeing - The Descent of the Sella in canoe or kayak (canoes), is among the star activities within the adventure sport in Asturias. Very well known thanks to the International Descent of the Sella, a sporting event that every first Saturday in August (after the 2nd of that month) brings together athletes from all over the world. The activity invites you to get on a Kayak or Canoe to, in a totally safe way, go down the river from our facilities to one of the arrival points that we have enabled. It takes place on the section of the river between Arriondas and Llovio (16 km) in Ribadesella - although we offer you the option of making shorter sections, which you can choose during the descent, such as the Toraño bridge (7 km), Llordón ( 11 km) and the already mentioned one of Llovio.
From each of these points we will transport you in vehicles back to the starting point.
Born in the Picos de Europa the Sella, this low section takes place in a dreamlike landscape between meadows and riverside vegetation with Atlantic-type trees and associated fauna, among which the most representative is salmon, but it is accompanied by a great number of birds, and mammals like the otter.

Additional Information

Often regarded as the national river despite its small size of just 75 km, the Asturian Sella has gained nationwide recognition primarily due to canoeing. Historical records suggest that this river represented the advent of canoeing in Spain. The renowned International Descent of the Sella has been a celebrated event since 1930. Experience the thrill that the rowers feel every year on the first Saturday of August as they navigate the mesmerizing surroundings of this Asturian river, immersing yourself in the typically Atlantic flora and fauna. The illustrious Soto brothers, esteemed canoeists and winners of the International Descent of the Sella, are known for their skilled and professional expertise and they are always ready to provide advice. The activity is family-friendly and also accessible to those who are physically disabled. Assistance is available in Spanish, English, and French.

A bucket list trip-fulfilled! - The Sella River is so picturesque and the kayaking was superb. It's a 0-1 'rapids' section of the river, so for us two older folx with minimal kayaking experience, it was perfect. There are 3 options for exiting the river depending on your stamina. A basic picnic (meh) is provided. This is not a guided experience but they do give you all the info needed to help you feel safe. Highly recommend! [But skip the picnic.]

Highly recommended - We did the long descent of 16 km, the landscapes are very suggestive, it was wonderful to feel immersed in greenery and silence (we were lucky, we were practically alone) It's both relaxing and challenging because, even if calmly, you have to paddle for 4 hours with a wet bottom... I didn't have any problems but I'm used to it. Very practical is the fact that, if you want to stop at the previous stages, you can do so and call the guys who will come and pick you up immediately. Absolutely do it

The peace, the landscape, the environment - We will repeat again, I went with my wife and we promised to return. Rana seals a company dedicated to this spectacular activity for the treatment they gave us. The Soto brothers are great professionals. Thank you very much

Really fun experience. - Unbelievably beautiful and interesting. I completed the 16km course, there were options to finish before then. Great holiday activity as a solo person or as a group.

Very enjoyable river kayaking - We are a family of 3 with a 17 year old who had his single kayak, whilst the parents took a double. The instructions were alright but perhaps including a start time would be helpful. In actual fact, they have continuous departure of kayaks down the river from 11-1. There’s a car park conveniently and registration was pretty efficient. We had an English speaking instructor who was most helpful and kept it simple. We absolutely loved the experience and did the whole 16km. You can bail out at 8, 12 or finish at km 16. The crowds ( and I do mean crowds, as it’s a popular activity) will dwindle after 8km so if you can, do the entire stretch. Beautiful scenery, sufficient packed lunch included, and one can even have a swim in certain parts of clearer waters. You can take as long as you like but be at a pick up by 6pm.

Intense descent - The kayak descent was very good. The flow of the river at this time is a little tight, but that makes the experience a greater stimulus. The fact of sharing it with 1998 other canoes was barely noticeable. An experience to repeat in another season of the year to be able to enjoy it even more.

Great experience but watch out at the rapids - Great experience but short of instructions in English re approaching the rapids. We capsized our kayak at the second rapid after hitting a rock- one of us was bumped on the head and later diagnosed with mild concussion. We managed to right kayak but as we did so, discovered that the barrel wasn't very secure and nearly floated away. However, the scenery was magnificent and we really enjoyed our paddle. Good value too.

Enjoyable but be prepared for a busy ride - It is a well run tour and efficient, however, it is very popular so was very busy when we went. We did have a great time but it was a bit like bumper cars (in kayaks) at some points.

Good organization, too many people - Very good and very efficient organization. The problem is that at this time of year there are too many people making the canoe descent.
