Surfing the Lava: A Culinary Adventure on Pacaya Volcano
When the waves of Central America call, I usually answer with my surfboard. But the allure of dining on a volcano in Antigua Guatemala was too tempting to resist. Join me as I trade the ocean for lava and embark on a culinary adventure like no other.
A Warm Welcome to Antigua
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve ridden waves in some of the most beautiful spots in Central America. But when I heard about the unique experience of dining on a volcano in Antigua Guatemala, I knew I had to trade my surfboard for a horse, at least for a day. My wife and I, always on the lookout for new adventures, decided to embark on this journey together.
Upon arriving in Antigua, we were greeted by the warm and welcoming Niki, who immediately made us feel at home. She went above and beyond to ensure our comfort, even helping us relocate from a less-than-ideal hotel situation. Her kindness set the tone for what would be an unforgettable experience.
Riding to the Volcano
The journey to Pacaya Volcano was nothing short of magical. With Alaska Dave as our guide, we felt completely at ease. His infectious enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the area made the ride up the volcano both educational and entertaining. The horses, gentle and well-trained, carried us through lush coffee plantations and charming villages, offering glimpses of the local life that we surfers often miss while chasing waves.
As we ascended, the landscape transformed into a rugged terrain of lava beds, a stark contrast to the ocean views I’m accustomed to. The ride was exhilarating, and the sense of adventure was palpable. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences are found off the beaten path.
Dining on Lava
Reaching the summit, we were treated to a feast prepared by a private lava chef. Sitting on colorful cushions, we savored traditional dishes like chips and salsa, all while taking in the breathtaking views of three other volcanoes in the distance. The highlight, however, was the pizza baked right on the volcanic rock—a culinary experience unlike any other.
As the sun set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, we indulged in gourmet chocolates and roasted marshmallows over the lava. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation that resonated with our nomadic lifestyle.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that this experience was more than just a tour; it was a celebration of the beauty and diversity of Central America. From the ocean waves to the volcanic peaks, this region never ceases to amaze me. And while I may be back on my surfboard tomorrow, the memories of this day will linger long after the sun has set.
