Trading Waves for Cobblestones: A Day in Antigua, Guatemala

When the waves took a backseat, I found myself drawn to the colonial charm and volcanic vistas of Antigua, Guatemala. Join me as I recount a day filled with history, culture, and unforgettable views.

Sunrise to Sunset: The Journey Begins

As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s rhythm, but this time, I decided to trade the waves for the cobblestone streets of Antigua, Guatemala. The allure of exploring a city steeped in history, with the promise of volcano views, was too tempting to resist. My wife and I set off before dawn, leaving the familiar surf of El Salvador behind. Our guide, Gaby, greeted us with a warm smile and a clean SUV, ready to embark on the five-hour journey across the border.

The drive was long, but Gaby’s infectious energy and humor made the time fly by. We made a few stops along the way, including a memorable one for some surprisingly good gas station coffee. As we wound through the mountainous terrain, the sight of the active volcano spewing puffs of smoke was surreal, a reminder of nature’s raw power. It was a stark contrast to the ocean’s gentle embrace, yet equally captivating.

Discovering Antigua’s Colonial Charm

Arriving in Antigua felt like stepping back in time. The UNESCO World Heritage site was even more enchanting than I had imagined. Our local guide, Manuel, met us at a rooftop restaurant, where we sipped on excellent coffee and hot chocolate while taking in the panoramic views of the city. His gentle demeanor and insightful explanations set the tone for the day.

We wandered through the Palacio Nacional and visited several stunning churches, each with its own story etched into the stone. The cobblestone streets were alive with color, and even the fast-food joints seemed to blend seamlessly into the city’s colonial character. It was a photographer’s dream, with every corner offering a new perspective.

A Day to Remember

As the day unfolded, I found myself captivated by Antigua’s charm. The blend of history, culture, and natural beauty was intoxicating. Gaby and Manuel’s thoughtful guidance made the experience all the more memorable. Their passion for their country was evident in every story they shared, and their attention to detail ensured that we didn’t miss a thing.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that while the waves will always call me back, there’s a world beyond the surf that’s equally worth exploring. Antigua’s colonial heritage and breathtaking volcano views left an indelible mark on my traveler’s soul. If you ever find yourself in Central America, don’t miss the chance to experience this magical city for yourself. Antigua Adventure
