It was a workout! - This was a tough hike! It’s definitely at least moderate to difficult because of the elevation gain and the difficulty that altitude poses when it comes to your breathing and endurance. It was a workout! It was tempting to give in to jumping on a horse to take you to the top but I stuck it through. The guide paces you and you take breaks along the way. The views at the top were worth it. The terrain was at times rocky and slippery with wear good shoes and be mindful of your ankles. It was cool roasting marshmallows in the crater but it was more gooey than toasted. We also got to see acatenango (or was it fuego?) erupting at least 4 times in the distance during the hike.

My experience at Pacaya volcano - My experience at Pacaya Volcano with VOYAGEUR TOURS was simply unforgettable. From the beginning the agency took care of all the details, which allowed me to enjoy the trip without worries. The transport was punctual and comfortable, and the guide who accompanied us demonstrated a deep knowledge about the history, geology and curiosities of the volcano, explaining in a clear and enjoyable way. The hike was challenging but accessible, and each step was worthwhile when you reached the scenic points, from where you can see not only the active volcano, but also breathtaking landscapes of the region. One of the most special moments was the experience of approaching the fumaroles and being able to toast marshmallows in the natural heat of the underground lava, something unique that I will never forget.

A worthwhile excursion - We loved going up to the volcano, it is two hours of climbing and two of descending, it is not complicated if you have previously walked by mountain, also the guide was excellent.

You can say you hiked a volcano… - This hike is pretty difficult. It’s a steep climb up and along the trail the hose vendors follow you up. You’re stepping on horse poop and slippery rocks. I would recommend getting a horse and don’t pay the driver! He charges a commission, you can pay the horse vendor directly and it’s $250 up or $350 for both ways. Entry fee to the volcano is $100. The views are amazing, do the 6am hike as the weather is really unpredictable and you can’t see anything if it’s cloudy or it’s raining. It’s fairly cool so bring a jacket or dress warm. There are also a lot of mosquitoes on the trail. At the top the lava isn’t hot or really steaming- your marshmallow doesn’t actually “cook” it gets slightly warm to the touch only.
