Pamukkale and Hierapolis Excursion from ANTALYA
Hierapolis, known as the “Holy City,” is an ancient city of Greco-Roman heritage situated in Phrygia, renowned for its thermal springs located in South West Anatolia, neighboring the modern city of Pamukkale.
Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Hierapolis has been a therapeutic spa destination since the second century B.C.E., attracting those seeking to alleviate their conditions, many of whom decided to spend their last years or pass away there.
Notable attractions include the expansive necropolis replete with sarcophagi, the primary thoroughfare featuring gates and public latrines, the cathedral, the amphitheater, and the final resting place of St. Philip. The thermal springs form natural terraces often referred to as the ‘Cotton Castle’ owing to their appearance.
Given the journey’s length, an early departure and a late return to Antalya are necessary, but the experience of visiting this extraordinary place is well worth the effort.
