Additional Information

Amsterdam’s elderly Jewish quarter is adorned with awe-inspiring synagogues, remarkable edifices, and significant memorials. Situated within this less-than-a-square-kilometer neighborhood is the Jewish Cultural Quarter. It encompasses the Jewish Museum, the surprisingly interactive Jewish Museum Junior, and the elegant Portuguese Synagogue. This place offers a comprehensive understanding of the Jewish culture, history, and traditions, all under a single entry ticket.

The Jewish Museum, occupying four monumental synagogues, furnishes a distinctive perspective into the intricate Jewish existence in the Netherlands, from the past to the present. The Jewish Museum Junior, designed as a six-room Jewish family home, provides an edutainment experience for 6 to 12-year-old kids, illuminating Jewish culture through a mix of solemn and playful games. Kids get to bake rolls in the kosher kitchen, learn Hebrew in the study, or create harmonies in the music room.

  • The Portuguese Synagogue is closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays

Remembering our history - Whether you are Jewish or not this is worth a visit. Take time to read the personal stories and learn about the Jewish culture in Amsterdam and throughout the Netherlands. The holocaust museum and name monument are also within a 15 minute walk.

Jewish life in Amsterdam - My husband & I toured and found it interesting. Liked that with your ticket purchase you got the audio to learn about the exhibits & entrance to the synagogue across the street. Unfortunately they were doing some construction, a bit noisy near the gift shop area & entrance. Definitely worth going to.

Interesting visit - Lots of historical information about Jewish history and also items of use within the Jewish religious traditions. Really good little video clips of real people telling their story. Free entry into the Portuguese synagogue too which was also interesting to see.

It is more than the Holocaust - It's important to remember when you visit museums that the Jewish people in Amsterdam are more than the Holocaust. This is not a Holocaust museum, but rather a vibrant look into continued Jewish life in Amsterdam. It was especially interesting to visit the synagogue and learn about Jewish life, laws, and the parts of a Jewish service. There was an especially moving exhibit where modern day Dutch Jews spoke about the Holocaust and what Jewish life means to them in relation to the Holocaust and generational trauma. We used I AMSTERDAM card Walk across the street to the Portuguese Synagogue included in the ticket price. No food small gift shop nice bathrooms lockers to store bags elevators - handicap accessible audio guide
