Dam Square - Just a five-minute walk from Centraal Station, Dam Square was created in the 13th century when a dam was built around the river Amstel to prevent the sea from flooding the city. In the middle, you’ll see the controversially phallic National Memorial statue of 1956, dedicated to Dutch soldiers and members of the resistance of World War II.
Canals of Amsterdam - After visiting the diamond factory, enjoy an exciting boat cruise on the Amstel River along Amsterdam’s most famous canals: the Lily Canal, the Lord’s Canal, and the Beer Canal. You’ll also learn about the city’s historical sights, including the Western and Northern Churches, Haarlem Locks, the Central Railway Station, St. Nicholas Church, the Wailing Tower, the Museum Nemo, City Hall, Flea Market, Skinny Bridge, and Manhattan on the Amstel.
Zaanse Schans - In the afternoon, take a half-day trip to Zaanse Schans and Volendam.
Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum featuring six windmills. In total, more than 10,000 windmills were built in Holland! There are also 35 wooden houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, showcasing Dutch lifestyle. You can also see a spice mill, an oil mill, a bakery museum, a wooden clomping shoe workshop, a cheese factory, and more.
Volendam - Transfer to Volendam (~25 km). Volendam is a fishing village with its own harbor, giving tourists a glimpse into the life of Dutch fishermen in the old days. Here, you can see locals in traditional clothes. The port of Volendam is filled with fishing boats, and a fish auction is held here. You can buy fish directly from a fishing boat in the harbor. The Dutch say, “If you’ve been to Holland and haven’t eaten herring in Volendam, then you haven’t seen the country,” because the most delicious herring in all the Netherlands is found here.
