Highlights
  • Musee Somme 1916 - The museum is accessible in 4 languages (French- English - German - Dutch).
The struggles that took place in the Somme in 1916 were one of the most terrible battles of the First World War.
From our entrance hall next to the Basilica, visitors enter a 250 meters long tunnel that is 10 meters below surface. As you leave the tunnel you enter our souvenir shop and ultimately Albert’s town park.

Here WW1 scenes in a series of fifteen different alcoves tell the tale of trench warfare in the Somme.

We also have 25 display cabinets in which you can study all kinds of WW1 artifacts and weaponry.

Sound and light effects add to the experience, taking you back to the time of the Great War.

The final part of your visit is the Gallery of Heroes, dedicated to nine individuals who distinguished themselves during the war.

The exit of the museum being in the public garden of the city, you will be able to discover the Arboretum where also floes the Ancre river with its cascades.

Great venue to visit - It’s a great experience, which is really well put together. Very atmospheric in the underground tunnels. Best in mind the venue is not in Amiens which I thought it was. It’s 20 miles past Amiens. Really well worth the trip.

A great history lesson - A little dive into this underground tunnel, where inhabitants had to hide and huddle together during the Second World War, where scenes from the Battle of the Somme (trench warfare) are presented with numerous decorations, weapons and other objects, allows us to imagine the damage caused at the time and to reflect on current events - Ukraine or Palestine - and the potential consequences. To see with young and old.

Worth a stop - Excellent museum. Really cool that it set in the tunnels under the town. The set up of the museum is really good as it varies between information boards, items, scenes set up and I think caters well to all visitors. Not the first museum to come up in a search but well worth a visit and one of the good ones we visited while in France

Family visit - This is a fabulous place to visit. Incredibly informative and interesting. Plenty for children to do - three teenagers really enjoyed it. The fact it is housed in a tunnel and gives the history of thjs is also fascinating. Well worth a visit

Worth a visit - We came here on a rainy day and I didn't know what to expect. It's a lot of WW1 memorabilia - everything from uniforms to guns, photographs, newspaper clips and much more. I found it well organised - you walk through an old tunnel that is likely to have been used during the war (although it was not constructed then). Focus is on the experience of war rather than glorification or justification. You come out in a different street - that was kind of fun. We both liked this place.

Worth a visit if you’re nearby. - Very interesting museum. Lots to look at, and the displays are interesting, even for kids. Beautiful gardens too, in a nice little village. Recommend.

Very rich and interesting - Very satisfying museum. We find ourselves in underground galleries and discover an immensity of objects of all kinds belonging to the soldiers of the time. Lots of explanatory signs which give very interesting information. Overall very complete, enriching. Interesting reenactment scenes with mannequins, very immersive. The only downside is the rather expensive price compared to that of other similar museums: 6.50 the student rate each. However, we were not disappointed and do not regret the detour.

Moving and respectful - Excellent museum showing great decorum and respect not glorification of war but focussing on the experience of the soldiers who fought

A must for the Great War enthusiasts - Very interesting and so many artifact's, almost too many. Very informative and good learning experience. Some say the place is dated, but we thought it bought into the age and stage of it's beginnings.

It looks a bit...tired - This museum was put together more than 30y ago (1991). Back then it probably looked pretty good, now it just looks a bit tired. Has a nice collection of stuff, and models of trench conditions. But no real story of what was going on with the battle. Why were the losses so high? Was was so little ground gained? For a much more comprehensive story along with updated visual effects I recommend you go to the Battle of Verdun Museum about 100km south.
