Highlights
  • Shamarra Alpacas - You’ll find your new furry friends here in a beautiful harbour on the slopes of an extinct volcano and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills. Shamarra Alpacas is just over an hour’s drive (73km) from Christchurch Central, and only a 20 minute trip from the historic seaside village of Akaroa, which is worth visiting for its culture and architecture alone. Our panoramic views of Akaroa Harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are breathtaking and will make every one of your selfies with an alpaca post-worthy.

We are open year-round, with the scenery changing beautifully through each season and the alpacas staying cute throughout.

Amazing animals and a beautiful location! - If you are an animal lover, a visit to Shamarra Alpacas is one of the very best ways you can spend an hour!!! The staff are incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, sharing so much interesting information about their beautiful alpacas. The alpacas are simply amazing - from cuddles with the boys to feeding the girls and babies, being surrounded by these amazing animals brings so much joy!!!! Akaroa is a beautiful little part of New Zealand, and Shamarra Alpacas are just the icing in the cake!

Alpace Farm Tour - The farm was great. It was so much fun to see the alpacas and have a chance to interact with them. The guide was good about answering out questions. It was also so much fun feeding them. I would recommend it.

Alpacas and beautiful view - what a great visit! - I had been looking forward to this visit for a couple of years now and it was very good. It was the only "must do" on my NZ visit. You can see the alpacas up close and the location is amazing. I didn't think much information was provided about the farm itself because most of the time is spent with the alpacas. Which is time well spent. I picked up a nice hat to go with my winter coat as well!

Alpaca hugs - Absolutely adorable alpacas. You could hug them and feed them. The guys taking us around where knowledgable, and they offered tours in both English and Mandarin. Afterwards you got some refreshments and cookie. Highly recommend! Just be aware that getting to the place involves driving up a steep road. Worked well for my Toyota Aqua but you gotta be confident ;)

An unforgettable experience with alpacas - I had a great time visiting the alpaca farm in Akaroa. It was a one-hour tour that included a lot of interesting information about alpacas, such as their behavior, personality, and lifespan. I learned how to tell the difference between male and female alpacas, and how they interact with each other and with humans. They were very friendly and gentle, and my kids enjoyed feeding and petting them. The farm was located in a beautiful spot, overlooking the sea and the sky. The scenery was breathtaking and added to the charm of the experience. The farm facilitator was very knowledgeable and passionate about alpacas, and gave us a detailed briefing before and during the walk. They also kindly accommodated us without a prior booking, which we really appreciated. The tour ended with some light refreshments and delicious homemade cookies. It was a perfect way to end a lovely day. The farm visit was very well organised and enjoyable. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves animals and nature.

Magic in a morning. - A magical experience amongst amazing creatures and a once in a lifetime chance. Exploring the nature of the alpacas was just incredible, I am speechless. Something you have to experience for yourself as visual does not even come close to the reality of the encounter.

Alpaca my bags- let’s go! - Not only was the experience of feeding Alpacas in one of the most picturesque places in the world amazing for any animal lover, the BEST thing about this tour were the staff. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and only too willing to help out. Our 1 year old got upset and not only did they help us leave the tour (when we asked) to calm him down, but once he had some refreshments (offered by them), we were welcomed by staff to rejoin the tour. Staff told us about individual alpacas including their name, their family and their temperament and were too happy to help us take photos. We would recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Akaroa region.

No way to get there - Not the Alpacas fault however, we came in on a cruise and there was absolutely no way to get to the farm. No taxis, no Uber nothing. We could not get there and we were not the only ones with tickets and no way to get there. My daughter and her friend were so disappointed. Viator should note, there is no transportation available in the town and not accessible if you don't have a car.

Disappointed - We were not told had to get transportation prior to arriving and so we were unable to go since there is no transportation in the city. Then were told through Viator (not Shamarra farms) that it was refundable but when applied for it told 100% fee
