Additional Information

This tour provides an opportunity to get a glimpse into the lives of ally soldiers confined in the camp during World War II. With an audacious prison break in 1944, a tally of more than 70 prisoners fled, only 3 succeeded in their bid for freedom. The tour doesn’t only include a visit to the camp’s museum but it’s also a moment to honor the lives lost within the camp. The museum showcases a life-sized clone of the shanty used by the men in conceiving their brave group departure, along with a display of authentic items from their captivity. Situated half-mile away from the shanty, you’ll find an opportunity to visit the “Harry” tunnel - one amongst three tunnels namely, Tom, Dick, and Harry, carved by the inmates. This tunnel now stands as a memorial. The tunnel length, ingress, and egress points are evident. A replica of a guard tower has been established to emphasize the proximity between the tunnel end to the aware German patrols. You can also venture into the forests to spot the original camp bases.

The Great Escape Day Out - We had a wonderful day with Michal the tour guide. He picked us up on the time agreed and was full of interesting comments about Wrocław and Poland’s history as we drove to Sagan. Very easy and very good company. The camp site was worth visiting and we had a lovely and memorable experience. We also got to see Sagan train station where many of the escapees boarded trains to get away from the immediate area as soon as possible after getting through the tunnel. From contemporary photos you can see this place has barely changed in 80 years! All together a marvellous day. Thank you Michal.

A must see - Michael our guide was superb. Very prompt pick up, polite and friendly. His local knowledge was exceptional. The tour itself was very interesting. Seeing the tunnel exit itself in proximity to the forest and the watch tower really hit home how scary it must’ve been. The museum before hand was full of memorabilia and artefacts from the time and a life size reconstruction of hut 104. A must see for anyone interested in WWII. Thanks for the restaurant recommendation. The food was the best we had during our time in Wrocław.
