This tour offers visitors the opportunity to experience the life of Allied prisoners who resided in the camp during World War II. In 1944, over 70 prisoners attempted to escape from the camp, but only three managed to do so successfully. This tour not only provides a chance to explore the Museum of the camp but also to honor those who lost their lives there.
At the museum, visitors can view a full-size replica of the hut where the men orchestrated their daring mass escape, along with many original items from the prison camp. About half a mile from the hut, visitors can also see the “Harry” tunnel, one of three tunnels dug by the prisoners (Tom, Dick, and Harry), which now serves as a memorial. Here, visitors can observe the tunnel’s length and its entry and exit points. A guard tower has been reconstructed to demonstrate the proximity of the tunnel exit to the vigilant German soldiers on patrol. Visitors can also wander through the woods to see some of the original foundations of the camp.
