As a wildlife photographer and travel writer, my adventures often take me to the heart of nature, but this time, I found myself amidst the bustling streets of Addis Ababa. The allure of exploring local markets and galleries was too tempting to resist, and I embarked on a shopping excursion that promised to reveal the city’s vibrant culture and history.

Our journey began at the iconic Merkato, the largest open-air market in Africa. The sheer scale of it was overwhelming, with stalls stretching as far as the eye could see. The air was filled with the rich aroma of freshly ground coffee, a staple of Ethiopian culture. As I navigated through the maze of vendors, I was captivated by the array of spices, textiles, and handcrafted souvenirs. Each item seemed to tell a story, a testament to the rich heritage of this incredible country.

Our guide, Shasha, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing insights into the history and significance of the market. His passion for his country was infectious, and I found myself drawn into the rhythm of the city. We paused at a small coffee shop, where local businessmen gathered for a quick espresso. The coffee was exquisite, and I couldn’t resist purchasing a bag to take home, a small piece of Ethiopia to savor later.

Discovering Addis Ababa’s Hidden Gems

Leaving the market behind, we ventured into the heart of Addis Ababa, exploring its hidden gems. The Piazza district was a delightful surprise, with its charming boutiques and street stalls. Here, I found beautiful jewelry and traditional crafts, each piece a unique reflection of Ethiopian artistry. Though no longer in use, the station’s grandeur was still evident, with its original signposts in French and Amharic. No journey to Addis Ababa would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. We stopped at Yonas Chercher, a local restaurant renowned for its traditional Ethiopian cuisine.
