A Warm Welcome to Addis Ababa

As a wildlife photographer with a deep love for Africa, I often find myself drawn to the continent’s vibrant cultures and breathtaking landscapes. This year, I decided to explore the urban side of Ethiopia with the Addis Ababa City Tour. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Alex, our guide, whose warm smile and genuine enthusiasm set the tone for the day. He met us in the hotel lobby, and after a quick check of our schedule, we were off to our first destination.

Our journey began with a drive up Mt. Entoto, where the air was crisp and the views of Addis Ababa were nothing short of spectacular. As we ascended, Alex shared stories of the hilltop church museum, where we would soon discover Ethiopian treasures and the former residence of the king and queen. The sight of playful monkeys swinging through the eucalyptus trees added a touch of wild charm to the experience, reminding me of the natural wonders I often capture through my lens.

Discovering Ethiopia’s Rich Heritage

Descending from the heights of Mt. Entoto, we made our way to the National Museum of Ethiopia. Here, amidst the bustling energy of schoolchildren, Alex guided us through the exhibits, bringing to life the stories of Lucy and other ancient fossils. His explanations of Ethiopia’s flag colors and geography were enlightening, and the interaction with the curious students, who eagerly sought hugs and high-fives, added a delightful human element to the visit.

Time was of the essence, and Alex’s ability to adapt our itinerary was impressive. He seamlessly rearranged our stops to ensure we could experience a traditional Ethiopian lunch and coffee ceremony. The meal, featuring injera and honey wine, was a culinary delight, and the coffee ceremony, complete with a traditional shawl for my wife, was a moment of cultural immersion that I will cherish. Sharing this experience with Alex and Adis, our driver, made it all the more special.

A Memorable Farewell

As our tour drew to a close, the reality of Addis Ababa’s traffic set in. Yet, Alex and Adis’s local knowledge and communication skills ensured a smooth return to our hotel. They coordinated with the hotel staff to have our shuttle ready, allowing us to grab our bags and make our flight with minutes to spare. Their genuine care and flexibility transformed what could have been a stressful layover into one of the most memorable parts of our trip.

Reflecting on the day, I am grateful for the opportunity to explore Addis Ababa’s historical and cultural highlights with such knowledgeable and passionate guides.
