The National Museum of Ghana, located in Accra, is the largest and oldest of the six museums managed by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB). The museum building was inaugurated on March 5, 1957, as part of Ghana’s independence celebrations. It was designed by two Ghanaians, Drake and Lasdun.
The National Museum of Ghana is an educational, scientific, and cultural institution that acquires, documents, preserves, exhibits, and promotes scholarly study and public appreciation of works of art, specimens, and cultural and historical artifacts representing the unique African culture.
W.E.B. DuBois Center - Explore the museum and learn about the history of W.E.B. Du Bois. He was an American sociologist, historian, author, editor, and activist, recognized as the most important Black protest leader in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. He co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909.
Du Bois was already renowned as one of the leading Black intellectuals of his time. The Black Star Gate was commissioned by Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, to signify triumph in the fight against colonialism, victory in the struggle for independence, and sovereignty for the newly independent nation.
James Town Lighthouse - James Town, the oldest part of Accra, is a vibrant and historic neighborhood rich in culture. Originally established as a British colonial settlement in the 17th century, it’s home to Accra’s first lighthouse, which still stands today. The area is known for its colonial architecture, colorful fishing community, and narrow, bustling streets full of life. James Town is also a hub for local art, with murals and street art narrating the city’s rich history.
