Quarshie travelled to the island of Fernando Po (now Bioko in Equatorial Guinea) in 1870 and returned in 1876 to Ghana in order to introduce the crop. He died on Christmas Day 1892.

The Aburi Botanical Gardens, a 64.8 hectares botanical reserve in Aburi, was established by Governor William Brandford-Griffith and Dr. John Farrell Easmon, a medical doctor from Sierra Leone, in March 1890. Tetteh Quarshie is a Ghanaian agriculturalist from the pre-independence era who is credited for introducing cocoa farming to Ghana, a significant contributor to the Ghanaian economy today. In 1879, he successfully sowed the cocoa seeds at Mampong.
