- Abydos - The journey begins with a pickup from your hotel or Nile Cruise in Luxor by a tour guide, followed by a transfer in a private air-conditioned vehicle to Abydos city. Travel north from Luxor for a day to explore two of Egypt’s most well-preserved temples. The Abydos Temple is dedicated to the ancient Egyptian god of the underworld. Abydos is one of the oldest cities in ancient Egypt and was part of the eighth nome in Upper Egypt. It is situated approximately 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) west of the Nile at latitude 26° 10’ N, near the modern Egyptian towns of El Araba El Madfuna and El Balyana. In ancient Egyptian, the city was known as Abedju. The English name Abydos is derived from the Greek Ἄβυδος, a name borrowed by Greek geographers from the unrelated city of Abydos on the Hellespont. The name Abydos is also represented in hieroglyphs.
- Temple Of Seti I - Located in Abydos, one of the most significant archaeological sites of Ancient Egypt, the Temple of Seti I is about 10 km from the Nile River in Upper Egypt. It served as a necropolis for Egypt’s earliest kings and later became a pilgrimage center for the worship of the god Osiris. It is also where the cults of the deified kings of ancient Egypt were celebrated.
The Temple of Seti I features an unusual L-shaped ground plan and is primarily constructed of limestone, with some sandstone used in various parts of the structure. The temple was completed after Seti I’s death by his son, Ramesses II, whose cartouches are found in certain areas of the temple, along with his distinctive sunk relief style, which contrasts with the very fine raised relief of his father. The entrance to the temple is on the northeast side, through a large pylon, now destroyed, leading into the first open court, which is also significantly damaged.
- Dendera Temple Complex - Hathor was one of the most important and popular deities in ancient Egypt, associated with music, joy, dance, and motherhood, and known as the lady of the sky. Her main cult center was at Dendera, where one of Egypt’s best-preserved temples stands today. The temple entrance, with six massive columns topped with the head of Hathor, is considered one of Egypt’s most beautiful monuments. Sistrums, a musical instrument closely associated with the goddess, frame her head.
The Dendera Temple dates back to the Ptolemaic Period, although evidence suggests older structures once existed on the site, dating as far back as King Pepy I from the Old Kingdom. Among the temple’s most notable features are astronomical engravings on its ceiling.
The temple is located in Dendara, situated north of Luxor. At the end of the tour, around 5:00 pm, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Luxor.
