Highlights
  • The Gordon Highlanders Museum - The Grant Room: Enter our main gallery and explore the dramatic 200-year history of the Regiment from the Napoleonic Wars, India, Afghanistan and South Africa, through to both World Wars and the Cold War. Interactive maps, original film footage, scale reproductions, life-size models, touch screens, regimental colours, uniforms, medals and weapons are all featured to bring the unique history of The Gordon Highlanders to life.

The Armoury: Step into the Armoury and come face-to-face with an impressive display of edged weapons, firearms and medals from Napoleonic times to the present day.

The Silver Room: Regimental Silver. Silver played an important part in the traditions of the regiments of the British Army. Officers’ and Sergeants’ Messes had their own silver, of which they were very proud. This was acquired in various ways; as booty (in the early days); bought from Mess funds (subscriptions from members of the Mess); donated by other regiments; or donated by individuals, usually to mark a significant event such as promotion, marriage or resignation. The silver would travel with a regiment or battalion, wherever they were stationed, and be in regular use in the Mess. Although silver was not taken on active service, it was still vulnerable to loss or capture.

The Lakin Room: The Lakin Room is arranged as the Officers’ Mess of The Gordon Highlanders and is decorated with some of the Regiment’s most treasured silver, crystal and china.

The Gordon Highlanders Museum, notably a 5-star Visit Scotland attraction, chronicles the thought-provoking and significant bi-centennial journey of the Gordon Highlanders, beginning with the Napoleonic Wars up to the present times. The Museum captures visitors with its impressive exhibits, multimedia presentations, and the enthusiasm and expertise of its tour guides.

Echoing the experiences of the regiment’s soldiers, the Museum presents an insightful exploration into the historical narrative of “the Finest Regiment in the World” (a quote by Sir Winston Churchill, 1900), a narrative that crosses two centuries of global history and prides itself with 19 Victoria Cross awardees, 11 of which are showcased.

The Museum also offers a charming Tea Room, ready to serve cakes, sandwiches, paninis, and a range of hot and cold beverages. Added to that, it also has a Gift shop, fully equipped with a variety of items, and provides FREE parking onsite. The Gordon Highlanders Museum - One of the best museum’s I have ever visited. Everything was laid out by time line and the exhibits were extraordinary. If you are a military or history buff this is the place to be. Ensure you give yourself plenty of time because there is a lot to see. We had the audio device each which gave you information on certain items on display. It was easy to use and you could pause it at any time if you required a bathroom break or a snack from the excellent café. An excellent insight into this famous Regiment and its past.

A stunning visit to a stunning museum - Fantastic collection, including some surprises, wonderful staff and wonderful cafe.. massive plaudits to the guide who showed us around the trench. Passionate with an in depth view on the given subject. Audio guide we opted for in the museum itself was well worth using as well (free of cost!) A guide could be used but we decided upon the audio guide in order to keep our own pace..all in all one of the best military museums I have had the pleasure to visit. A definite 5/5!

Best museum I have been to. - Oh my gosh this place is amazing. We found it on our way to Johnston Gardens. The museum is amazing and trench recreation is also great. The staff were an added bonus so friendly and so knowledgeable. I wanted to thank Darren who gave us the opportunity to see some of the silverware up close in the dinning room as he happened to be cleaning it, and also telling us some great stories about some of it. Lynne who showed is around the trench was great too. Also want to thank Davide in the Cafe he was very friendly. All in all I would definitely recommend that if you are in Aberdeen you visit this place.

Great experience - We had an excellent guided tour through the well done museum. Interesting and informative. Our guide was very helpful in explaining who the Gordon Highlanders were, how they came to be and the many roles they played in the British military for 200 years. We also had a chance to meet some delightful old veterans there and hear some of there light hearted tales. Very enjoyable and I highly recommend a visit.

Tourist Visit - Great displays showing the history of the regiment over the last 200 years. I enjoyed learning about the regiment itself and all the British involved wars. It was interesting to see how battle technology has progressed through the years. Big shout out to our trench guide Davide who was very informative. Standard admission was £10 and that included our audio guide.
